@gohomekinney@AlabasterJoseph@cooldetat The literal only info we have here is 1 interview with the company themselves. Fine if you don't trust it, but "metric shit-ton" is something pulled from thin air too, and spreading it like a fact is also misinfo
@AlabasterJoseph@cooldetat The people behind the campaign say they usually use around 25 accounts per artist. Not sure where you got “metric shit-ton”? Or do you know something we don't?
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop oh, I see the issue: your definition of industry plant is much broader than the usual one. useless back and forth if we aren't using the same definitions for this stuff. hope you can see my point from this perspective. have a good one
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop is Jane Remover a plant for using this company? she's not even on a major label and came up through soundcloud. surely you can't argue that she's an industry plant just for having a budget?
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop no, I think you're misreading me. I started this by saying you can't call them plants because they used this marketing, because the two are unrelated. you seem to argue that they are related. that's what I'm pushing against. I just want this to be a focused and clear conversation
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop Then what the hell are you talking about with the plant stuff lmao. That's a whole separate point that I don't even disagree with you on
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop your cynicism is not useful anticapitalist analysis and puts the blame for the system onto the artists who are already struggling across the whole field. get a grip
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop all marketing can do that. does all marketing make you an industry plant? you can abstract this shit into oblivion to make your point work, but we're talking about very specific examples here. be concrete. paying this company for their services does not equate to being a plant.
@_parody_burner@cumboi83@theneedledrop my point is that this is not an "industry plant or not" discussion. irrelevant point, because decidedly non-plant artists also use this company (and similar companies). a band using this marketing does not make or break them being a plant, it's irrelevant here
@cumboi83@theneedledrop Headline is irresponsible because it singles out Geese for no reason (many other artists, like Dijon, Mk gee, Jane Remover, Wet Leg used their services), it frames it as an "industry plant" action which is obviously different from paying for marketing, and misleads readers.
@d3strokk@OneFeIISwoop yes i see, that makes sense. the article kinda does seem to pull specifics out of its ass unfortunately, and it's going to make any discourse that comes out of this insufferable lol. thanks for clarifying !
@d3strokk@OneFeIISwoop could you elaborate on what's wrong with it? I also had the feeling that there were some weird leaps being made in that article, but I know nothing about this industry so I'm clueless about what's happening and what isn't lol
@Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi i see your point but i think the sheer scale of unlisting that would have to happen here is immensely impractical and costly. different from phasing out old and lesser-played games over time
@Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi those are expired sync licenses actually! decisions made on the publisher's side, not on valve's. PRS licenses don't "expire" like that.
@PXC_Macavity @Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi literally who cares. they have a couple flaws and are otherwise an immensely good thing to have in an evil music industry
@DaiTigris@Jebus3211 @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi it's not the formatting, it's the distribution. on a technical level, valve distributes the files. thus, they'd need a license (if PRS is right that this counts as "making available")
@Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi that seems highly unlikely to me. that would be ~every single UK artist ever, lol. besides, Sony + Microsoft are already paying this specific license. they seem to either agree with PRS or think it's not worth a legal fight. we'll have to see where the valve case goes
@PXC_Macavity @Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi yes, PRS has been overzealous in the past, but i would rather that the union representing my rights do too much for me than too little. if they think they have a valid case (i'm not sure i agree with em! but w/e) then i'd like them to fight for it.
@Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi from what i'm seeing, the vast majority of other games publishing & online entertainment platforms are already paying for the exact same license they want Valve to have. Valve is the outlier here
@Jebus3211@DaiTigris @zoriguess @Comrade_Waluigi ah, i get ya. i think that's key to the lawsuit here. PRS has been arguing that when you make a game available to download, you are in fact distributing the work. (ie. the file exists on your pc directly.) valve would need a separate license that only PRS can grant for that.
