In the heart of Dukana, Marsabit County, members of the Shamo Tuna Self-Help Farmers’ Group are hard at work, weeding their thriving crops to ensure a healthy and abundant harvest. Building on the success of their first planting cycle, they have now sown a second generation of diverse crops, including kales, spinach, carrots, onions, peppers, dhania, watermelon, pumpkins, and moringa.

Through dedication and climate-smart farming techniques, these farmers are not just growing food—they are strengthening community resilience, improving household nutrition, and creating sustainable livelihoods. By adopting water-efficient irrigation, organic soil management, and drought-resistant crops, they are proving that agriculture can thrive even in arid environments.

Their journey is a testament to the power of innovation, hard work, and community-driven solutions in the fight against food insecurity.

As the world grapples with intensifying climate shocks, locally led, evidence-based interventions are offering hope—and direction. In Marsabit County, Northern Kenya, we’ve witnessed this firsthand.

In response to the devastating 2021–2023 drought—which decimated over 80% of livestock in some areas—we’ve partnered with Oxfam Kenya and the Australia Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) to deliver a lifeline to 133 vulnerable households in Eledimtu and Koba villages.

Each family received 3 goats (2 does and 1 buck)—a seemingly modest intervention with powerful ripple effects:

✅ Immediate nutritional support through milk production
✅ Economic empowerment via potential income generation
✅ A natural pathway to herd regeneration and future resilience

🐐 Veterinary-backed quality: All goats were certified healthy by the County Veterinary Department, ensuring community trust and long-term sustainability.

Incredible lessons and experiences from the integrated cross-border recovery response project teams today in @MarsabitGov Moyale Kenya/Ethiopia.

The project aims to promote peaceful coexistence and build resilience of communities living along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

SND was honored to host a delegation from @OxfamAustralia and @oxfaminKE for a monitoring visit to @AusHPship -supported project sites in Marsabit County.

During the visit, the team engaged directly with community members, witnessing firsthand the impact of our Livelihood and WASH interventions—from increased access to clean water and improved sanitation to enhanced sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond infrastructure and services, the discussions focused on protection and inclusion, ensuring that women, children, and persons with disabilities are not just beneficiaries but active participants in shaping their communities’ future.

We are grateful for the continued support of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) in empowering communities, strengthening resilience, and driving sustainable change in Marsabit.

We’re excited to share the successful completion of the Godoma Borehole Project in Marsabit County—a milestone that brings safe, clean, and reliable drinking water to the community! This project was made possible by the incredible support of the @Sida and our dedicated partnership with the @drckenya.

Through this collaborative effort, we were able to solarize, equip, and secure the borehole, improving access to water and transforming health outcomes. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably SDG 3, 6, 7, 10, and 13—as we work towards healthier, more resilient communities.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the County Government of Marsabit for their essential role in drilling the borehole. This project is a testament to the power of partnerships to drive meaningful impact.

Looking ahead: We now shift focus to Dukana and Bori, as we continue working towards sustainable water access for local communities.

Thrilled to participate in the Ninth session of the Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (#AfRP9) and the Eighth High-Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in Windhoek, Namibia (21-24 October 2024), under the theme “Act Now for the Resilient Africa We Want.”

During the session, we had the opportunity to present on the importance of early warning early action (EWEA) in reducing loss and damage during disasters, drawing lessons from our experience in Kenya’s ASAL counties.

Key takeaways:

- EWEA saves lives and livelihoods.
- For EWEA to be truly effective, it must be locally driven and community-centered. Communities should not just receive early warning information—they must be involved in the program design.
- ⁠Inclusivity is vital: EWEA should respect local languages, cultures, and indigenous knowledge, and ensure the active participation of marginalized groups, including youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
- ⁠Given the multiple shocks affecting the African continent, we need to adopt a multi-hazard, multisectoral, and multi-country approach for successful and effective early warning and early action. Shocks know no boundaries.
- ⁠State and non-state actors must commit to funding EWEA efforts—early warning without early action is meaningless.
- ⁠Investment in institutional capacity, research, and technology (such as artificial intelligence and simulation) is critical. Innovation and bold ideas will help us navigate the challenges ahead, especially as Africa remains uniquely vulnerable to disasters.

Let’s keep pushing forward for a resilient, inclusive Africa where no one is left behind.

In 3 days, IGAD will launch the 𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑩𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒆 (PRBP), a crucial initiative co-financed by the EU and BMZ.

This programme aims to foster stability and socio-economic development in IGAD’s cross-border communities, with a special focus on ASAL regions.
