The Director @IGADHealthS, Amb. Moussa @Meigague, and the Head of Mission to Somalia, Dr. @MohamoudKaarshe, are leading the IGAD delegation at the Horn of Africa Confederation of Trade Unions (HACTU) Leadership Meeting.

The meeting was graced by H.E. Prof. Salim Alio Ibro the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs @SomaliaMolsa, @AmbGamal, Minister of Commerce and Industry @mocisom and the @AddisIlo Director, @KhumbulaILO

Representing the Executive Secretary, @DrWorkneh, Amb. Moussa highlighted that labour, employment and human mobility are central to IGAD’s efforts to advance peace, resilience, regional integration and shared prosperity, as reflected in the 2021 Djibouti Declaration on Labour, Employment and Labour Migration and the IGAD Protocols on Free Movement of Persons and Transhumance.

Promoting the IGAD Free Movement Protocol in Somalia

The IGAD Head of Mission to Somalia, together with an IGAD delegation, paid a courtesy call on Somalia's Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Salim Alio Ibrow, to discuss progress on the ratification and domestication of the IGAD Free Movement Protocol.

The discussions focused on strengthening regional integration by advancing the implementation of the Protocol, enhancing institutional capacity, and promoting safe, orderly, and productive labour mobility across the IGAD region.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to accelerating the ratification and domestication process, underscoring Somalia's support for greater regional cooperation and the free movement of people within the IGAD region.

🤝Advancing the Free Movement Regime in Somalia Through Social Partners

The #IGAD and @AddisIlo team in #Mogadishu engaged with the social partners, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) on promoting the Free Movement Regime across the Federal Government of Somalia.

➡️Under @NUSOJofficial, journalists and media practitioners are being mobilised to raise public awareness of the benefits of the Free Movement Regime, including improved access to essential services, trade, employment, tourism, and cultural exchange.

➡️Through the Tripartite framework (Trade Unions, Employers and Government), @festusomalia is promoting the Free Movement agenda to help citizens across the region benefit from its rights and opportunities.

Facts matter just as much as informed public debate matters. The #IGAD Protocol on Free Movement of Persons deserves accurate and people-centred reporting that helps citizens understand the opportunities it creates, advances regional integration and promotes the free movement of people.

Yesterday, @NUSOJofficial welcomed a visiting @IGADsecretariat delegation to the trade union headquarters for a dialogue with senior journalists, facilitated by @festusomalia.

@NUSOJofficial, together with sister unions, supports the Protocol's ratification and domestication because informed citizens are essential to the successful implementation of regional integration.

H.E. Prof. Salim Alio Ibrow, Minister of Labour & Social Affairs (@SomaliaMolsa), today met with the #IGAD delegation, led by IGAD Head of Mission to Somalia, Dr. @MohamoudKaarshe, and #IGADFreeMovement Action Coordinator @LucyDaxbacher, together with @AddisILO National Project Coordinator Sharmarke Farah, to discuss the ratification and domestication of the IGAD #FreeMovement Protocol.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to fast-track the Protocol's ratification, strengthen institutional capacity, and promote safe, orderly, and productive labour mobility across the IGAD region.

Today, @IGADHealthS hosted a courtesy visit from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) @eu_echo delegation at the @IGADsecretariat Headquarters.

On behalf of the IGAD Executive Secretary, Amb. Moussa A. Meigague (@meigague), Director of @IGADHealthS, met with Mr. Olivier Brouant, Regional Rapid Response Coordinator for Disaster Preparedness, and Mr. Clément Cazaubon, ECHO Technical Advisor, in the presence of Dr. Osman Bilal, IGAD Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator, alongside coordinators from other IGAD programmes.

The discussions focused on strengthening regional humanitarian coordination, disaster preparedness, displacement response, and the “One IGAD” approach to addressing complex humanitarian challenges across the Horn of Africa.

IGAD hosted a high-level delegation from the European Union, led by Ioana Albulescu of Directorate-General for International Partnerships.

Discussions focused on aligning priorities, strengthening cooperation, and advancing a shift toward more integrated, results-driven approaches across peace & security, climate resilience, and economic integration.

IGAD also presented its upcoming 2026–2030 Strategy, with a strong focus on institutional transformation and digitalization.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger, more impactful partnership for the region.
