Finally, 2020 did something right: bring us closer than ever to figuring out black holes. I’m grateful to @mmoyr of @QuantaMagazine for his patient and capable editing of a very very complicated story. https://t.co/fU7ykrQRDf
The @NobelPrize committee is very precise in its language when describing what each award is for. Today, the Chemistry award was “for the development of a method for genome editing”, not "for their contributions to the amazing science of CRISPR".
From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:
1/ ‘I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do.
Still relevant, as there is a lot of confusion. Symptomatic fatality rate is 1.4%, according to Prof Gabriel Leung, founding director of WHO Collaborating Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Control in HK, but it's still not precise due to uncertainty in data.
If the number of reported confirmed cases of #COVID19 continues to slow down, the 2% fatality rate people have been quoting will appear to rise. But it will be a statistical illusion. Let me explain why.... 1/
Sharks are not guilty! Not as much as horses, bees, jellyfish, deer, elephants, scorpions, tsetse flies, dogs, snakes, humans, mosquitoes, HIV & lots of others! Killing millions of sharks annually is not justified. #xsensing19#sharksmart

A new paper out today in Nature Astronomy argues that the universe may be closed like a sphere, rather than flat. Other cosmologists say the evidence for this is probably a statistical fluke. I blogged about it: https://t.co/o7LhRWJXc0
Can't believe my desk used to be next to my colleagues' desks who worked on pinpointing origin of Homo sapiens sapiens and I had no idea about details of their groundbreaking research! So proud of them!
The ancestral homeland of all humans alive today can be found south of the Zambezi River, in northern Botswana, according to a study in Nature. The research adds temporal and geographical context to the story of modern human evolution. https://t.co/kqz11uf3t3
Can everybody stop referring this paper please ? It's misleading. Astronomical data is limited only by available storage capacity. It's unlimited by its nature and could be generated as big as one likes, while genomic data is limited per se. Pretty please ?
Conversations with @gopalpsarma led to us discussing about “genomics May be the only near future data being the size of an exabyte?” How large is that? Approx 10 million whole genomes #geneticsAnalysis#genetics#broadie https://t.co/2GiecKZ74Z
@FranklinFoer@TheAtlantic And @nytimes article about what it really takes to work for Amazon. Must read for everyone before accepting @amazon interview or job offers

I spent five months on this cover story about Jeff Bezos, his master plan for humanity, and the problem of his power. It's about how one man is able to impose his values on the rest of us https://t.co/gSVYxL6G4X
