I’ll keep saying it at every opportunity; giving generative ai even an inch of space through the door of research publishing (or even the whole world in general) was always a mistake, and will prove to be a horrendous one.
It’s never too late to stop it.
AI can be used to make convincing looking fake data.
There is no way we can distinguish real from fake anymore.
It is safe to assume that genAI has already resulted in many fake papers. Scientific publishing is not prepared for this.

A Question for @AriesSystems Editorial Manager users -
do people flags not show up against co-authors in the manuscript details page? If that person has a flag on them?
trying to figure this out and can't tell if I am testing it right or if it just doesn't work
thanks
Had a lot of fun running the science communication workshop this afternoon at #EMPSEB29 - that’s the 29th European Meeting of PhD Sudents in Evolutionary Biology.
The second workshop of @EMPSEB29 given by Duncan Nicholas @DNJournal from the European Association of Science Editors @EASEeditors.
An amazing workshop about science communication #EMPSEB29
Lots of great participation from the group, loads of interesting ideas and discussion, and it was a real pleasure to learn about so many fascinating projects the students are working on.
@EMPSEB29 @DNJournal@EASEeditors Thanks so much for the kind words, and the invite to speak, it was really fun.
This is my handle btw - with my cheesy Twitter pic (the one that isn’t obviously really old 😜)
A lot of discussion at #WCRI2024 about the impact of AI on reproducibility, research integrity, and open science. Our new preprint "Open Science at the Generative AI Turn: An Exploratory Analysis of Challenges and Opportunities" looks at these issues https://t.co/4Xry4UEPmz
Defining quality of peer review and how that quality should be measured is difficult - Please share your thoughts on this topic by responding to EASE RFI - https://t.co/Fhkc5FeBZe
No doubt there is much about peer review that could be automated - people have been working on it for many years.
This session looks set to get into the social and technological issues of potential implementation of new AI models in peer review, with some fantastic speakers.
Join us for the EASE webinar on 21 May.
@Mario_Malicki@mikethelwall@LuSun_Selena@james_y_zou discuss how the landscape of peer review is already changing due to these new technologies.
This EASE webinar is free and open to all.
