Job alert!🚨 Join us @UABBarcelona to investigate human memory representations with intracranial recordings, eye-tracking, immersive VR and deep learning. Fully funded, four-year PhD position at the Prediction and Memory Lab. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Our new paper is out in @NatureHumBehav 🎉
During extinction learning, amygdala theta oscillations signal safety, not threat. Similar to episodic memories, extinction memories are stable and context-specific. Check it out 👇

Decoding the human thalamus: iEEG and stimulation data now shared with anyone interested: https://t.co/vakaVEhGWA. Thanks to @VivekBuchMD for great collaboration and for taking us deep inside the human thalamus —what a ride! Also check https://t.co/PAfDFF5ifn in the same issue.
New paper out in @NatureComms with 1st author
@mcosta_17. Activity patterns within gamma bursts during emotional memory encoding reappear at retrieval. Burst activity is key as overall pattern of encoding-retrieval similarity in gamma is anti-correlation in amygdala & hippocampus
See our new human iEEG study in @NatureComms:
During aversive memory retrieval, gamma activity patterns—shaped by the amygdala at encoding—are reactivated in the hippocampus.

We’re hiring! My lab @UCDavisCNS and @UCDneurosurgery is recruiting two postdocs in human intracranial neurophysiology & neuromodulation. We study cognition & emotion in movement disorders, collect direct cerebellar and basal ganglia recordings, record intracranial neural activity in real-world settings, and develop adaptive DBS approaches for non-motor symptoms.
We now have a fully operational Optically-Pumped MEG system, thanks to generous funding from @AgEInves and closely working with @CercaMagnetics. A real pleasure to be visited by @EvaOrtegaPaino, Secretary General for Research at @cienciagob, on the 1st day we are operational
1/ Super-excited to share our new work “Episodic and associative memory from spatial scaffolds in the hippocampus”, out in Nature today! https://t.co/QYcLNhhEwr @FieteGroup@sugsharma@rischaudhuri. Key insights and ideas 👇#tweeprint
What a great way to end the year!🎉
Thrilled to announce our paper is now out in @NatMachIntell
How can agents achieve both sample and memory efficiency?
We present Sequential Episodic Control (SEC), a hippocampal-inspired model that uses sequential memory to guide actions!🧵
🎉Finally published @PLOSCompBiol !
Why do neurons use low-frequency oscillations for encoding? Why not use higher frequencies for better sampling resolution?
We identify a speed-precision trade-off driven by noise, showing that theta (3–8 Hz) maximizes bits/s!

How does the brain prioritizes working memory content? By analyzing iEEG recordings in epilepsy patients with RSA and various DNN models, we reveal the distinct signatures of WM maintenance and prioritization in the ventral visual stream and the PFC.

Our new work on sleep TMR and item-specific neural representations is now available online. Check it out and thanks for all collaborators @TaoXia9@DanniChen9707@Mira00472647 @JamesWardAntony @xiaoqing_hu on this great journey!
I am thrilled to share the results of our study just published in @CurrentBiology where we show that hippocampal gamma activity is coupled to opposed theta phase states during encoding and retrieval of episodic memories in humans.

New job opportunity in my lab! Wouter Kruijne and I are now recruiting a PhD candidate on the topic of active and passive states in human working memory. Retweets are much appreciated! https://t.co/UnafLqhQBB
Do eye movements play any role in #auditory#perception? Using #eyetracking and #iEEG we found neural excitability in the auditory system changes across the saccade-fixation cycle. It increases at the end of fixation and during #saccade.
It was indeed an excellent meeting, full of refreshing ideas.
Thanks so much, Aytac, @elkanakyurek, @StokesNeuro, @mijowolff, @dpacheco5 for organising the "Searching for the WM engram" workshop! #WMengram
Small & focused meetings are the future of in-person conferences!
