Borrowed Calm, Borrowed Stress
In the military, in the most physically dangerous of times our colleagues lend us calm. In the broken NHS, the opposite is often true.
How can we fix it? Substack here

I've written this open letter to @Keir_Starmer & @wesstreeting because, though I am desperately worried about NHS patients over the next 5 days, I know this strike by resident doctors is a desperate act of last resort.
Please read.
When patients are talking about “my doctor,” many talk about their GP.
It’s a privilege to care for a person as go through their last moments in life or help a patient struggling with mental health.
None of these are transactional. It’s holistic, whole person care. #TeamGP
Let’s really ‘Bring back the Family Doctor’ @wesstreeting@SKinnock@NHSEngland@DHSCgovuk with a real patient focused contract & real funding to make it happen
Patients want to see GPs & GPs want to see patients
Your GP, here for you - time to make it happen, it’s in your hands
Wes Streeting threatening that he will further doctors’ unemployment if they strike?!
He’s actually willing to tank the NHS for his own ego?!
This is the most immature & dangerous health secretary I’ve seen in my professional career.
There’s a perception that turning General Practice into same day urgent service will relieve pressure on hospitals.
This fails on many levels. Hospitals aren’t busy because of GP.
What will help is funding GP to do more prevention work - reduce long term demand on healthcare.
For the NHS, it’s another escalation in a destructive cycle brought about by an inexperienced health secretary, advised by people who want us to make the same mistakes they made 20 years ago.
It’s time for a change. https://t.co/Vp96Lx4Wur
The only “refuseniks” here @SKinnock are you and your government.
You’ve refused to listen, refused to fund, and refused to provide the promised safeguards.
You’ve dumped chaos on exhausted GPs. When burnout turns to collapse, don’t pretend you weren’t warned.
🧵 Government says GPs need to step up.
Here’s what “stepping up” looks like ⬇️
13,000 consults, 7,000 admin tasks, 900 reviews — in five weeks.
We’re not the problem. We’re the scaffolding holding the NHS up

GPs are already offering record numbers of appointments.
You’ve now imposed a new route of access without additional resource or appropriate safeguards.
It’s almost like you want us to fail @wesstreeting
A report from the Nuffield Trust described the general practice partnership model in England as “withering” and called for urgent government action.
The survival of GP partnerships requires improvements to the GP contract
