The first documentation of active microbial sulfate reduction in serpentinizing systems bearing directly on the potential for long-term habitability in subsurface environments on and beyond Earth, where sunlight or the chemical products of photosynthesis are not available.
Microbial sulfate reduction is active in highly alkaline serpentinization fluids and could provide an energy source for subsurface life on Earth and potentially other planets.
