To explain:

Virginia’s time ended long ago, and today it’s just another US state, but it was originally the home of the masculine, noble, and brave Cavaliers.

Massachusetts’ time is now ending, but for almost 400 years it was a center of higher learning. That’s why Harvard and MIT are there.

These were the two most important American colonies. In a sense they compete and cooperate every 100 years.

In the mid 1600s they fought back in England itself. First the Cavaliers vamoosed for Virginia, then the Roundheads migrated to Massachusetts.

Roughly speaking: the Cavaliers were the right and the Roundheads were the left, and the English Civil War was over the same themes of hierarchy vs equality.

In the 1700s they worked together to beat Britain and found the United States.

In the 1800s their descendants fought in the American Civil War.

In the 1900s they worked together again to win WW2 and found the American Empire.

Now in the 2000s they are fighting once again, over the same themes of hierarchy (red) vs equality (blue), even if the geographic center of red has been displaced somewhat to the South and the geographic center of blue has been dispersed across the Northeast.

My view is that red and blue will unfortunately smash each other to pieces over the next several years, and then gray will have to pick up the pieces.

Gray is tech in its modern incarnation of the techbro.

Tech is the intellectual successor to Massachusetts, as the migration to the Internet of Harvard’s best proves. Bill Gates, Zuck, and @paulg all moved away from Harvard in the literal sense. And of course Larry Page, Steve Jobs, Vitalik, and many other college dropouts moved away from Harvard in the metonymic sense.

But in its more recent techbro incarnation, tech is also becoming the virile successor to Virginia. Elon, Zuck, and Palmer Luckey are examples of techbros respectively becoming leaders of men, packing on muscle, and getting serious about the military.

Amazingly, this synthesis — the techbro — did not exist years ago. But it was memed into reality by blue attacks. And has the balance that blue and red both lack. Train weights, yes, but also lift weights.

I think this synthesis, the techbro, will be crucial to what follows. After all, the techbro founded America. Let’s see what they found next.

It's 2025. Time to talk about time.

We've officially put a bow on the first quarter of the 21st century and are in day one of quarter #2.

Times we grew up envisioning as the far future aren't so far away anymore. Even if lifespans stayed as they are now, many of today's college students will live to see the 22nd century. Many of today's babies will still be in the peak of their careers in the year 2100. And 2040, 2060, and 2100 are now closer to us than 2010, 1990, and 1950.

Likewise, much of what still feels like recent history is beginning to look a lot like ancient history. NSYNC's "Tearing Up My Heart" came out closer to the moon landing than to today. E.T. hit theaters closer to the 1930s than to today. And Billy Joel's "She's Got a Way" was released nearer to World War I than the present moment.

If Back to the Future were released today, Marty would be heading back to the ridiculously retro year 1995. His teenage parents would be doing hilariously old things like talking on big cell phones and hanging out in AOL chat rooms.

And of course, no existential time crisis would be complete without The Wonder Years. The show aired from 1988-1993 and took place in the years 1968-1973. If the show debuted today, it would be set in 2005-2010 and cover nostalgic old things like Obama's election, Instagram like counts, and Taylor Swift concerts.
