Empowering Teachers, Enabling Futures!
In a major step towards future-ready education, @IITKanpur has launched the Digital Literacy, Computational Thinking, Coding & AI (DLCCAI) Science Teacher Training Program — the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
In collaboration with @basicshiksha_up (SCERT Uttar Pradesh), the program is training 750 selected Science teachers from PM SHRI Schools, Upper Primary Schools, and Composite Schools across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
These teachers will be trained through a hybrid model — 5 days of immersive offline learning at IIT Kanpur, followed by structured online sessions — to ensure sustained learning and impact. The ripple effect? Reaching nearly 75 lakh students in Grades 6–8 in government schools with critical 21st-century skills in AI, coding, and digital literacy.
🎙️ The inaugural session featured:
🔹 Prof. Satyaki Roy, Head, Dept. of Design, IIT Kanpur
🔹 Dr. Pawan Sachan, Joint Director, @basicshiksha_up
🔹 Prof. J. Ramkumar, Dept. of Mechanical Engg. & Design, IIT Kanpur
Dr. Sachan emphasized that this initiative is key to transforming classrooms into creativity- and innovation-driven ecosystems, while Prof. Roy highlighted the importance of responsible digital usage, especially in rural areas where tech access can be limited.
Prof. Ramkumar noted this program as a milestone in bridging traditional pedagogy with cutting-edge technologies — a step forward in positioning Uttar Pradesh as a leader in educational innovation.

My students Gopal and Mahavir (now a Prof at NIT Uttrakhand) designed this after a long journey of testing & trials. All started with a simple fascination to enhance safety #thatsiitk#SafetyFirst
The 'Metal Cutting Device with Waste-Collection Mechanism' is an innovative technology developed by a team of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur IIT Kanpur and E Spin Nanotech Pvt Ltd. The invention was led by Mr. Gopal Ashok Gupta (Design Department), Mr. Mahavir Singh (Mechanical Engineering), Dr. J. Ramkumar (Mechanical Engineering & Design), Dr. Tarun Gupta (Civil Engineering), and Dr. Sandip Patil (E Spin Nanotech Pvt Ltd).
The modified chop saw machine effectively addresses the hazard of high-speed, hot metal particle splashing, which is a common safety concern in metal cutting operations. The design confines and collects these particles, minimizing the risk of injury to workers.
The novel design fully protects workers and surrounding areas from metal particles, preventing burns, eye injuries, and contamination of the workspace. By reducing metal waste and contributing to cleaner workspaces, the technology is environmentally friendly as well. This design also ensures the longevity of both the machine and its components.
The technology can be adapted to various types of metal cutting machines, making it suitable for different industries, particularly in manufacturing and fabrication environments. This innovative metal cutting device is an excellent solution for improving safety, reducing waste, and increasing operational efficiency in metal cutting applications.

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
“There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
“If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!
“Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”
In a significant move to address the growing need for student accommodation and enhance campus infrastructure, IIT Kanpur has initiated plans to construct a new state-of-the-art hostel. This development is part of the institute’s broader strategy to improve living facilities and support its expanding academic community.
The institute has identified older structures on the campus, which have been assessed as structurally unsafe due to their age, as the site to build new hostel. Residents of these structures have been given sufficient time to relocate, with necessary support extended to facilitate the transition.
The institute is also actively working to ensure that the services of the dhobis (laundry workers), who are an integral part of the campus community, remain uninterrupted. IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with the civil administration, is assisting those affected by the relocation process, including exploring housing options under government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for eligible individuals.
IIT Kanpur remains focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and community while facilitating the development of critical infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the campus.
The "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign was launched by Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, 2024. Under this campaign, people have been encouraged to plant a tree as a tribute to their mothers. As part of this campaign, IIT Kanpur has set a target to plant 3,500 trees by March 2025. As of November 15, 2024, a total of 2,680 trees of various species have already been planted within the IIT Kanpur campus.
IIT Kanpur has always been committed to maintaining environmental balance and tackling global warming, and will continue to do so in the future. As part of this campaign, the leaves and thin branches of trees are being cut into small pieces using an electrically powered bio-shredder and collected in a pit. The process of converting these into compost is underway. This compost, which is fully organic, is then used for gardening and landscaping work within the institution.
The aim of this initiative is to tackle global warming and ensure a safe future for the planet.

At IITK Kanpur we have ALWAYS promoted interdisciplinary collabs. A BSBE. Dept. innovation goes to the Mech Dept. for prototyping, CSE & EEE for circuitry & Des Dept. for user study & feedback and so on.... The easiest way to be closest to a user IS an interdisciplinary approach.
We have lost our gems, Prof. Godbole, Prof. Sharma & Dr. Debroy. At IITK I met them in my journey & been inspired by their grit and passion. The touch of a gem transforms, so has everyone who met them. No one can fill the gap, only take the legacy forward.
Happy Diwali 🪔🪔
Festivals bring us together, they bring a smile, and bring warmth & positivity. Wishing everyone a joyous season, optimism, good health and prosperity.
