@professorteds Just did an activity @MariettaCollege where my students drew pics of mathematicians. Only two drew women, no one drew people of color, no one drew themselves. Who gets to do mathematics?
@MissDanielleOSU@MissJonesOSU@MissMorosky I feel like a lot of this is tied to aspects of praise...too much for certain students, what is actually being praised (answers, people, strategies, or thinking), or disproportionate praise (to only students "good" at math.
@MissDanielleOSU@MissJonesOSU@MissMorosky I do think that there is a delicate balance between praising students on their strategies and critiquing strategies when solving problems. We want students to be proud of their work ,but at the same time not feel defeated if their strategy yields an incorrect result.
@MissSmithOSU@MissJonesOSU@MissMorosky It can be very hard to stop teaching and listen to what children understand about the problems, and their strategies for solving problems. The way that we can get at this is toquietly and listen, ask questions when students aren't talking, and ask them to explain their ideas.
@meadows264@WolfordCassidy Student invented algorithms for problems can offer a lot of insight about their thinking, and can serve as a launching point for deep mathematical discussions. Having students explain their own "shortcuts" can also do this!
@WenzelCassidy@alymekinda@WolfordCassidy I remember my 9th grade Algebra teacher would always list the highest scores on our tests and quizzes. It always felt good to be on top of the list, but as I look back I wonder how those who were NEVER up there felt? This is why we celebrate strategies rather than if correct.
@rmkuzmaOSU@WolfordCassidy This is a great point Rachel! Also many students will come to our classes with already having memorized how to count to 10, 20, or 100. Developing foundational concepts like cardinality and one-to-one correspondence by making connections to these songs or chants is important!

Taking the time to get to know our students, understand their interests, and capitalize on the contextual knowledge they have in those domains can be a powerful tool for advancing mathematical thinking. It's the whole point of the getting to know you interview.

It is super important to make sure that we think carefully about both the numbers that we use in our problems as well as our students familiarity with the context in the problem. That is why I typically use contexts like brownies...you can eat them! ;)
@MrDakotaOSU@MeaganClardy Completely agree! Understanding that knowledge takes time, but is so worthwhile when you start to make connections between strategies or previous ideas! That is why the problem solving interview is super important! :)
@MissJonesOSU@MeaganClardy I think a lot about instances where teachers ask students to identify "keywords" in problems, and how in different problems those words can mean completely different things For example "altogether" not necessarily meaning addition.
