In 1967, British surgeon Donald Ross (1922-2014) replaced a diseased aortic valve with the patient’s own pulmonary valve (which itself was then replaced by a cadaveric valve), which became known as the Ross procedure. He also performed the 1st heart transplant in the UK in 1968.
