Tamil Nadu’s GST collection FELL 1.4% in August 2026.

India’s grew 9.3%.
That’s a 10.7 percentage point gap for India’s 2nd largest Tamil Nadu state economy.

And it’s not one bad month. It’s the third in a row.
Here’s what’s actually happening 🧵

✅First, kill the noise.

Sequentially (Jul→Aug), TN fell 2.2%.
Haryana fell 14.4%.
Maharashtra fell 10.7%.
Gujarat fell 6.8%.

August is soft everywhere.

TN’s problem isn’t August. It’s the base it’s being compared to.

✅Driver 1: The GST 2.0 base effect

Aug-2025 was taxed at 12% and 28% slabs.
Aug-2026 at 5% and 18%.

Same goods. Less tax.

Weighted avg GST rate fell from 11.64% to single digits.

TN’s base is concentrated in exactly what got cut: textiles, autos, cement, white goods, insurance.

✅Driver 2: The cess collapse

Autos were 28% + cess of 1–22%.
Now mostly 18%.
National compensation cess collections fell 69% YoY in the first full month under the new structure.

TN is India’s auto capital. Chennai–Sriperumbudur–Oragadam–Hosur.

DMK for 1000 days they didn’t do anything from Parandhur village issue to build Airport.

Now after 3 month from TVK in office many expecting to resolve parandhur village. Before election he promised to those villagers not to have Airport and politician should stick to their promises and he is doing that.

KTCC & Chennai people overwhelmingly voted for Vijay knowing this all before as well.

He clearly said official identified alternate land for Airport. Even if Vijay build another airport in Chennai, many will cry we want only in parandhur.
