@SoftwareEUG@hypergameme Now Brian you weren’t trying to define a soul you were defining what offy floaty god people think a soul is, and that ain’t self awareness.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal Is there an objective morality?
Big Q: If yes - what establishes the objective morality?
Big A: Something.
Whatever that “something” is = God.
All disagreements about the nature of God are permitted.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal You are free to say that there is no moral truth and no ultimate authority. Societies make their own moral rules and certain rules have persisted for millinea bc they work
You can say there is moral truth according to something but we have no idea what that something is.
@partylike1399@Naropa88@CatholicAce@TheCatholicEngr Yes @TheCatholicEngr St. Louis had a massive reduction in parishes. Rather than sell / abandon the churches themselves parishes were combined in a practical relationship of main parish and satellite parishes w/ reduced sacraments.
Pls correct your post.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal The physical act itself (atoms interacting in the universe) is morally neutral. But obviously it is always wrong. Something needs to make it so. That is what authority is, and it is authority that governs our collective interactions as people.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal Then how are they moral truths?!? Without any authority couldn’t r*ping be good for the person doing it?
“You can’t do that?”
“I just did”
“It’s bad”
“I don’t think so. I’m conquering their society”
“Still bad”
“According to what?”
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal R*ping is alway bad.
I don’t think atoms tell me r*ping is always bad. I don’t think any material tells me that.
If any future society reached a consensus that it wasn’t always bad, I would know that they were wrong.
@JerichotheWolf@TheCatholicEngr Your right. Let’s deprive them of sacraments. That’ll teach ‘em.
It’s not like visiting the imprisoned is a corporal work of mercy.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal No. The whole conversation assumes moral truth. Dammit im close to being snarky again.
Assuming objective morals. They have to be imposed by something. Frankly even the laws of physics need to be imposed by something. This is the point!
@Naropa88@CatholicAce@TheCatholicEngr 1. It’s the archbishop and this priest filing the lawsuit
2. It’s not a political stunt. It’s a lawsuit bc a jail in a rural county isn’t letting people receive sacraments. The goal is to get ppl sacraments.
3. We protect religious liberty by suing.
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal Of God (Christian God, Hindu gods etc)
But my point is that if establish 1. There is moral truth - then 2 you do need *a* god.
And frankly I would worship whatever highest thing did establish objective morality. f you want to deny that there is an objective morality then OK
@Crypt0_Facts@AnselmDescartes@Tim0riginal “a” brings the focus to an appropriate level of abstraction. the OP that the guy you were replying to QTed put the challenge at 1. There is moral truth and 2. You can’t prove it relies on “your God”. Now “your” does seem to require some theological description as to the nature…
Hahahaa man remember 2018 when we were all debating the MMT thing and the one (1) caveat was “the real limit to all this is just inflation”
Bahahahaah
We did it guys! One pandemic, insane wars and tariffs and we did it. 7 years!
@CatholicAce@TheCatholicEngr Let’s go through the checklist again:
1. Yes or no?
2 Yes or no?
I’ll add another
3. Should the church not pursue getting detainees access to the sacraments, because doing so could be viewed as a political stunt?
@jdflynn There’s also a chronological element where people, in yesteryear, severely underestimated the prevalence of child SA. The church’s scandal was first, then ministers, coaches teachers and general broad awareness that it is a common threat parents can’t be naive about.
