My oil painting of a California grizzly mother with cubs 400 years ago in a coast redwoods-bay laurel grove along a stream with coho salmon. I love oil paints because of ability to create complex layering and glazes that allow light to bounce through. Oil on paper 10x8” 1998
One of my early reconstructions of late Holocene California, based on historic descriptions of grizzlies feasting on a beached gray whale: the bears were going inside the carcass to feed. 6 species of gulls, a bald eagle, and flocks of geese also depicted. Acrylic on paper
When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
On this day in 1919 Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata was assassinated by government forces in Morelos after an ambush.
"I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees."
Every day, Donald Trump makes it clear he only cares about one thing: himself.
Now, as fire season begins, he’s closing wildfire offices, putting New Mexicans directly in harm’s way.
I won’t stand by while our communities are put at risk. We will protect our forests, invest in wildfire prevention, and make sure New Mexico is prepared — because our future depends on it.
White House aides got an email last month telling them not to place bets on prediction markets, multiple sources told @CBSNews.
Press reports had raised concerns about govt officials using nonpublic info to place wagers on Kalshi and Polymarket, said the email, from White House Management Office. The warning reminded staff that's a criminal offense, and is also prohibited by govt ethics regulations.
"All White House employees are reminded that the misuse of nonpublic information by government employees for financial benefit is a very serious offense and will not be tolerated."
“Land of No Fences,” my reconstruction of late Holocene California grizzly in the South Coast Range 300 years ago. Blue oak savanna and nodding needlegrass (Nassella cernua). Oil on cotton rag paper primed with shellac, 1997.
Extinct California grizzlies fishing for giant chinook salmon in the Sacramento River, late Holocene before European contact. Oil on cotton rag paper 7.5 x 10 inches
When the Secretary of War made these comments, about one in five people killed by Operation Epic Fury were elementary-age schoolgirls in the middle of a normal school day.
McGovern: Republicans can't answer because they were against war with Iran until exactly the second Donald Trump decided to go to war, and now they're all running around sounding like neocon lunatics.
America can't take this level of gaslighting. I went to the classified briefing. There was no imminent threat, I guess, unless Republicans want to redefine the word imminent to mean stretching back 47 years.
This whole thing is just so transparently built on lies. Republicans went from imminent threat to regime change to nukes, back to imminent threat in the last 24 hours. This is Iraq 2.0. I still remember the lies about WMDs. I voted against that war, too. At least George Bush had the decency to lie to people's face.
It's not Donald Trump's kids that will have to go fight and die for their draft dodging dad. It's not the children of of the billionaire Epstein class. It's working class kids who are going to put their lives on the line. Shame on Republicans. I'm sick of this bs. We're spending billions of dollars a day on a war, and we can't even get Republicans to join us to expand health care in America.
How the hell is this America first? You guys broke your top campaign promise. Good luck with that. I hope the defense contractor money was worth it. Shame on you all. The mask is off. You're all just a bunch of pathetic Neocon Warmongers.
We've made The Bolivarian Revolution by Simon Bolívar, featuring an introduction by Hugo Chávez, free to download.
"Bolívar foresaw the threat of the US and described it
with surprising clarity."

Issa Rae has canceled her sold out performance at the Kennedy Center. Pulitzer Prize winner Rhiannon Giddens, Peter Wolf, Low Cut Connie, and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C., have also canceled. Lin-Manuel Miranda has canceled the entire Kennedy Center run of Hamilton.
By mapping the meanings of the words used to communicate emotions across more than one-third of the planet’s spoken languages, a study in Science found that there is significant variation in how emotions are expressed across cultures. #ScienceMagArchives https://t.co/82xQ1RADHW
When Melissa Hortman was assassinated in June by a rightwing killer, sitting GOP senators made jokes. When Charlie Kirk was killed today (by an as yet unknown killer), Democrats unanimously condemned it, while the right actively stokes retaliation against the entire left.
Trump: “I am ready to move to the second stage of sanctions against russia.”
First, he promised to end the war in “24 hours.” Then it was “two more weeks.” Then another lie. And another. Nine months have passed—and only now he’s “ready” to talk sanctions?
Putin doesn’t care. At all. Trump has proven himself a dysfunctional leader. Since taking office, he has halted military aid to Ukraine, cut intelligence sharing, and openly sided with Putin. Instead of sanctioning russia, he welcomed a war criminal to the U.S. with a red carpet.
The result? Ukrainian civilian casualties have tripled. Let’s call it what it is: Trump has been lying all along, and his words are worth nothing.
