Happy to share recent work led by Ramis Rafay and in collaboration with Jane Fowler and @DavidASivak, out now in PNAS:
"How to quantify immigration from community abundance data using the neutral community model"
We address the practical question: "When sequencing, how many samples and what read depth do I need to accurately infer the immigration rate?"
We also introduce two distribution-based methods for inferring the immigration rate. They require less data than existing methods, too!
Out today in @PhysRevX: “Information Arbitrage in Bipartite Heat Engines”, with Jannik Ehrich & @DavidASivak@SFUPhysics. Check out the paper (https://t.co/kpQoasdPLV), or a Focus article in @PhysicsMagazine: https://t.co/IrvkV7JVH4 (1/10)
Proof that you can teach a theoretical dog new experimental tricks...
UCCS grad student Autumn in the Jones Lab observes fluorescently labeled bacteria. Our first experiment!
The Department of Physics at the University of Toronto is recruiting candidates in Theoretical Biological Physics for a tenure track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor.

The Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University (in beautiful and vibrant Vancouver) seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Experimental Biophysics, encompassing all scales of life from molecules to ecosystems.
Happy to share that I successfully defended my PhD thesis ("Stochastic Thermodynamics of Multicomponent Molecular Machines") @SFUPhysics earlier this week. Thanks so much to everyone who supported me along the way, especially my supervisor @DavidASivak!
Happy to share that I'm headed back to Colorado!
Introducing the Jones Microbiome Lab at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. We'll study the spatial organization and statistics of microbiomes, w/ a focus on making sense of real datasets.
Sound interesting? Let's chat!
This is quite interesting. We have done a lot of indoor microbiome studies but I confess to never having thought of looking at microwaves. https://t.co/PQ8dWMepKI
Thanks to the entire @DavidASivak Group and @SFUPhysics for an awesome three years in Vancouver, @NSERC_CRSNG and @pimsmath for funding support,
and the collaborators that make research so much fun!

I'm joining the Department of Physics and Energy Science (@UCCS_Physics) as an Assistant Professor, and will be affiliated w/ the UCCS BioFrontiers Center
(pic of columbine is from my recent trip up Capitol Peak)
I put together a 50ish minute lecture on long-read sequencing technology covering:
1. Review of RNA-Seq Short-read Sequencing
2. Overview and benefits of Long-read Sequencing
3. @nanopore Sequencing
4. @PacBio Sequencing

The energy invested in animal reproduction is as much as 10 times greater than previously estimated, according to a new Science study.
The findings fundamentally challenge longstanding theories and biological models of animal growth and life histories. https://t.co/1zptaxe28H
