7 Jan 1610: Galileo Galilei records his observation of the four largest moons of Jupiter—Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa. He calls them ‘Cosmica Sidera’ after his patron, Cosimo de’ Medici, but they are known today as the ‘Galilean’ moons in honour of Galileo.
