Today at #WHA79, MPP and @Roche celebrated the signing of a public health-oriented voluntary licence agreement for baloxavir marboxil, an #influenza antiviral treatment recommended by @WHO.
The agreement aims to expand access to baloxavir marboxil in 129 low- and middle-income countries and support broader pandemic preparedness efforts through geographically diversified manufacturing and supply pathways.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening preparedness for future influenza outbreaks and pandemics through innovation, partnership and sustainable access.

"Tools on their own don't end epidemics," says @eburrone from the @MedsPatentPool at #AIDS2024. Long-acting PrEP could significantly reduce the 1.3 million new HIV infections yearly, but we need millions on PrEP.

#AIDS2024
At #AIDS2024, Esteban Burrone (@eburrone) from the @MedsPatentPool highlights that DTG-based regimens are now more affordable at $40 per patient per year, benefiting 24 million people globally and contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
🎙️@eburrone of MPP concludes the MPP/@UNITAID session at #AIDS2024 by highlighting 3️⃣important lessons we can learn from the DTG story 👇🏼
✅we need to have a parallel approach, and not do things sequentially;
✅in doing so, we need to be ready to take risks;
✅we need to be telling the DTG story to show that accelerated access to innovative medicines is possible, and that we can do it in other disease areas.
Early engagement between @MedsPatentPool and innovators, sometimes even before regulatory approval, helps fast-track generic development. This approach has been effective for HIV and COVID treatments, ensuring generics are ready as guidelines evolve, said @eburrone at #AIDS2024.

When I started working in HIV, @MSF’s Untangling the Web was the first publication I was told to read to understand some of the access challenges being faced in LMICs. The breadth of expertise in the AC team has always been impressive. I’m concerned to hear latest developments…
Very disappointed to have missed the #G20 Health Working Group meeting this week. I tested positive for COVID at the airport as I was about to go through security. A reminder that COVID-19 is far from over....
🎤@eburrone of MPP closes the session by highlighting 3️⃣ key moments of the #dolutegravir story:
✅ the signing of the licence with ViiV Healthcare in 2014.
✅ when TLD was approved in August 2017. This new fixed-dose combination regimen was created by generic manufacturers thanks to the licence agreement.
✅ when it became real in 2018: people had finally access to DTG 💪🏽💪🏽.
