Here's a simple computer analogy to clarify what intelligence actually means.
* "Skills" are programs, like chess.exe.
* "Cognitive capacity" is CPU/RAM -- how much computational resources you can dedicate to executing skill programs, e.g. ability to focus, retain things in short-term memory, and make predictions multiple steps in advance.
* "Intelligence" is the ability to develop new programs to solve problems you haven't seen before. In this analogy, intelligence is possessed by developers using computers, not by the computer itself.
* "How intelligent you are" maps to how efficiently (from an information standpoint) you can develop new programs. E.g. you need to study for a programming interview vs. if you're able to improvise solutions to problems very different from what you've seen before.
To be intelligent is to be able to efficiently pick up new skills to solve tasks you've never been prepared for. The more intelligent you are, the more efficiently you can convert your past experience into very different, open-ended skills.
