@dc_lawrence@ArguablyMag We should still be intentional about where we build data centres, who controls them and what we (and local communities) get in return. That's what progressives should be focused on: working out how to get win-wins rather than the lose-lose of blocking all data centres.
Classic example of importing a progressive take from the US which makes much less sense in the UK
Sending our data & emissions abroad won't solve any issues with American big tech dependency, the environment and domestic energy costs🧵
I've tabled a new cross-party parliamentary motion for a moratorium on new AI data centres.
AI data centres consume vast amounts of energy and water, put pressure on local infrastructure and make our climate targets harder to meet.
We cannot allow their unchecked expansion.
Environment: we probably have a greener grid than wherever else you're hoping will host the compute we use. More in @dc_lawrence's piece for @ArguablyMag here

I really like @callumzcoleman and @ed_lawrence_'s idea that the AI taskforce's mission should be leverage, so this weekend I chose to muse about a few different futures and how the UK can have leverage in them:

What the OpenAI/HF Attack Tells Us About AI Danger
@tracyalloway and I talk to @Miles_Brundage about everything we've learned since the incident, and what it means now for further safely developing the technology https://t.co/qksXsO3hqQ
🚨Very excited to be involved with this new project.
2024 provides a window of opportunity to transform UK science and technology, to support growth and life-changing innovations.
Got an idea? We want to hear it, and help turn it into implementation-ready policy.

This weekend I was selected as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for our new constituency of Earley and Woodley, my family home. It's the honour of my life to stand in the next general election to build a greener, fairer future for us all.🌹@UKLabour 1/3
@Samfr Are people interpreting the question as: "Given the state of the health service now, if there was a resurgence in covid similar to what we saw before, would you support bringing back..."?
Last week the Basingstoke Labour Party hosted a Diwali event at Carnival Hall. We were delighted to be joined by over 200 people and special guest @VirendraSharma
Thank you to the Basingstoke South Asian community and Carnival Hall for both attending and giving us a place to host our Diwali celebration!
Very sorry to see you leave government, @redditchrachel. You were an excellent, minister, always attentive to MPs and their constituents and got some very tricky legislation over the line!
Hannah and I would like to introduce Ronan Isaiah Lawrence, who was born into this world on Tuesday, 7 November 2023. We are now back home from hospital and are inexpressibly happy!
Since I am utterly absorbed right now, I will be taking some time off campaigning and will also be bit slower to respond to messages over the next few weeks.
