@MrHodl @1914ad That may justify your preferred default, but it concedes my point: the old default mattered enough to hinder users and push activity into private channels. So “anyone could change their settings” cannot also be used to dismiss the impact of changing it. Defaults shape the network

@MrHodl @1914ad 1MB being consensus-valid since 2010 is beside the point. If defaults don’t matter because nodes could already raise the limit, why change the default and risk this backlash? The change itself proves defaults matter.

@LynAldenContact @ScarcityMan You're not answering his claim. BIP-110 doesn’t make hidden abuse impossible. It reduces Bitcoin’s OFFICIAL channel for arbitrary data. Legally, that distinction is decisive: providing a supported storage function is not the same as being exploited through unintended use

Knowledge, intent, and ease of retrieval determine how the law applies. So just run BIP110

The limits restore longstanding policy and preserve monetary/cryptographic use. Openness does not mean subsidizing arbitrary data. Doing nothing raises node costs and weakens Bitcoin as money.
