I don’t think “knowledge acquisition” is the right framework for evaluating a college degree. Most people aren’t paying primarily for the content — they’re paying for the credential signal, the peer group, the network, the mentorship, and the formative experience.

Books can be an amazing substitute for learning, but they don’t replicate the institutional stamp, the structured environment, or the social/ professional upside. It’s a bit like saying golf practice replaces fitness: you may get some overlap, but it’s not the same product.
