@mediaking Which is what makes it so hard to replicate great media businesses - trying to be a fast follower can be a game of chasing shadows and tapped-out strategies.
@dhh@37signals I think the effort that @zoltanhosszu put into this says almost as much as the designs themselves. Impressed on all fronts.
Awesome to see you celebrate the submission @dhh. Would love to see the question for the take home assignment if you’re able to share?
@ViperChill Great summary Glen. I read the quote on your site - their approach of planning for “Google Zero” is apt; it would help them to adapt ahead of the curve.
Quick question - I’m assuming the 608M or Google Search refers to organic only?
Very well articulated Jason!
So much of “whether we should?” comes down to “do we want to?”
Enjoying the journey is the ultimate goal.
That said, I think the very act of describing outlandishly hard visions, those that are more difficult to achieve than anything else - like Elon does - is also the catalyst for attracting great talent.
Which paradoxically means that sometimes the hardest things can become the easiest.
@eshear@clipperhouse I went down this rabbit hole recently and also came across Guru (getguru), which is similar to Glean, and which integrates with Asana, Github, +
The most effective treatment for fungus gnats that I’ve found - by far - is “bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis” aka “Bti” and also sold as “Mosquito Bits”.
We had an unsolvable infestation in my office for years until we used this, and then instant cure.
The fruit fly traps work great for fruit flies, but the Bti was the only thing that worked for the fungus gnats.
@levelsio@getRewardful@Wise Hey @levelsio, check out @airwallex . I use them in my company and rate them highly. They offer virtual credit cards and FX transfers, at the same low type FX rates that Wise does. Would recommend.
When this fire burns it burns hot; people with this type of drive are resilient and unflappable. They’re bothered little by challenges and speed bumps, and in fact, perhaps they’re even enthralled by them.
The drive you’ve articulated is also one that stokes the engines of longevity. It’s not a whimsical feel good sense of altruism, but rather that a deep-seated and unwavering yearning that yanks at the inner core.
If you're looking for a purpose, 99.9% of the people and resources will recommend you to look at things that you love, lose track of time doing, feel called for, etc.
It's wonderful if that works for you. If it doesn't, there's another way: Look at what truly annoys you, other people don't get, feel laughably miserable, seek the things that absolutely don't make sense to you..
You can tell a hundred things off the top of your head, if you're not a deadbeat. Pick the one that annoys, enrages, baffles you the most (=biggest "amplitude" of feeling).
The obvious example to this - this is/was the mindspace that Edison type entrepreneurs (Dyson, Jobs, etc) lived in. They were disgusted by the low quality products around them. It wasn't the love and joy of contributing to humanity - that can be unlocked later. You also don't have to be the Edison type entrepreneur for this. Rockefeller type (Bill Gates come to mind) also operated this way - they were shocked at the inefficiencies, the sluggishness and overall incompetence of ALL the others and wanted to have it ALL and do it 100x better than anyone else.
Thiel's question of "What important truth do very few people agree with you on?" basically means "What do you see that other people don't?" - of course the quality of the answer matters here, but that ultimately depends on who you are.
Easily one of the best business books that I’ve ever read (or listened to).
Perhaps even #1.
Give it a whirl if you’re a CEO or Founder - you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks @bhorowitz for sharing your hard-earned insights.

@Shwinnabego Nice Ashwin! Would you mind sharing how the views were split by platform and maybe even format? Eg TikTok, Insta Reels, Insta Stories, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, etc?
Wondering why you lose sales to a ragtag bunch of competitors? Especially when you think you’re clearly better?
Baffled as to why your prospective customers don’t appreciate your obvious points of glorious difference?
If so, then try swapping seats with the other side of the table for a moment.
For the last few days I’ve been muddling my way through the purchasing process for a piece of operational tech that’s new to me.
I can’t fault the sales people that I’ve been chatting with - but it sure is hard to differentiate these products.
While I can see some variation, the question remains - do I care about those differences, or are they just nice to haves?
It feels like all of the features, bells, and whistles are nice, and some are very nice, but not essential - and so at this point it’s going to come down to price.
It’s a sobering experience to watch a multi-stage sales process end in this type of dollars and cents price negotiation.
Aside from walking away with a new system, I’ll also be walking away with some new insights.
@thesamparr Optimizing for profit and cashflow is the unloved cousin of the venture scene because it doesn’t have “world’s biggest company” vibes. But, it does lead to a much better life for founders during the journey.
