This also explains a lot about why some papers/sub-subfields are impenetrable to casual or student readers. Before you know enough to see the tricks people use, the puzzle pieces of different papers just feel like they don't fit together and it's hard to tell why.
1/n) A small thread on argument structure... I've been thinking about this bc @TheFrontalLobe_ recently posted about Tim Van Gelder's famous paper, and I turned into a complete jerk in response (sorry again André). I was asking myself, why does that paper make me so irritable?
@neurograce Journal of Vision publishes visual neuroscience, and is pretty broad about the definition of vision (visual cognition, visually guided motor tasks...).
@KordingLab I am not in Asia, but Australia. I found the time difference was too much for most sessions. For the others, it might have helped to indicate an Asia-pacific time zone in the schedule (I saw EST and Europe).
This was a great read! Recommended for anyone working to connect their results to the kind of narrative that makes people care (ie: me, I am bad at this).

@neuroamyo Depends on skills! I’m fluent/confident because of self-driven projects as a teen. Good grasp of formalisms thanks to CS education, capable at what I do now because of discipline-specific practice. When I teach, I aim to teach the confidence :).
Anyone doing sensory neuro have a way of coping with one word two meanings here? (sensory v. viral transduction?). I try to avoid this when I write, but neither really has an alternate.
Dear neuroscientists: when you use a viral vector to express stuff, the correct term is "transduction", which refer to introduction of foreign DNA into cells. "Infection" is used to describe the natural process by which a (wt) virus propagates in an organism/tissue. 🤓
@neurograce As a reader, I like a little summary of the major points and how they connect to a bigger picture. It helps me evaluate my own understanding of the text, and gives me a skimming target when I want to go back to refresh my memory.
