@scdrover I agree that a quota is not necessarily needed. It would be nice to see Canadian artist's get more recognition but perhaps there would be a more effective way to do that rather than simply playing Canadian content just because a quota tells them they "have to". #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 While I agree that it is important to recognize Canadian talent, do you think that with more people consuming music from personal devices instead of though radio, that the goal of implementing a quota would be hindered? #POPMUSW22
Having a quota for Canadian music shows good intentions but I think the effect it would have today is minimal. Many people listen to music from personal devices, therefore Canadian content would not be promoted to anyone who doesn't frequently listen to the radio #POPMUSW22
@MeganBenoit797 I totally agree! I think that the preferences of today's audience are too diverse to be able to say definitively whether one form of consumption is superior over the other. #POPMUSW22
@jenna__macinnis You mention recordings sounding different than live performances, that was always something that shocked me. A difference is definitely expected between them, but what always catches me by surprise is how BIG of a difference there really is for some artists/songs #POPMUSW22
Wald's assessment is ambiguous for today's pop audience. Recorded music is consumed more, it is more accessible. There are instances when I believe people would prefer hear a live cover, like at a pub/bar. Several factors determine the preferred method of consumption. #POPMUSW22
@NlSammi I fully agree. I believe the race of the individuals played a significant role in the sales. It would be interesting to see if there would be a different result in sales if the music was released during a time when race was less influential on peoples opinions of music #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 Great points. The times have certainly changed for the better in that sense. Artists have become more cognizant of providing credit where credit is due when covering music of other artists. #POPMUSW22
Schlock rock was given its name as it is essentially a rip off version of an original belonging to someone else. The means of creation for schlock rock was unethical, but there may be some value in it if the original artist's version is recognized as well #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 I definitely agree. I feel that sometimes, we are distracted by the fame of artists and forget that they are only human too. Ray Charles certainly does a fine job of using emotion in his music to remind us that there is more to musicians than just the music they make #POPMUSW22
@katheri83015055 I agree 100%, you make a great point. I'm sure that the difficulties he faced in life had a major impact on the music he created. It would be interesting to know how different his music may have been if he did not have these real emotions fuelling his music. #POPMUSW22
Ray Charles uses a breaking voice to help convey the emotion he feels in his music. Other blues music tends to cover deep emotional topics with meaningful messages. Ray Charles' vocal technique further emphasizes this heavy trend of emotion among R&B music #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 Good question Christina. I believe it is both of those. I know many people who enjoy a vintage lifestyle and would rather dive into the past with a record player than to use a phone. On the other hand, there are also people who seem to own one simply for the sake of a photo op.
New record players impact the way we consume music. It links the old school way of listening, while using modern technology to boost the experience. At a time when music is so accessible, it provides a unique and trendy experience of having to search for music you want #POPMUSW22
@RyTheriault I did not know about this feature, it sounds very cool. It reminded me though, about the annual Spotify wrapped. It has become a very popular and easy way for people to share their music tastes with one another. Great post! #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 Great post! I relate to your point about song suggestions from music streaming platforms. The genres of music and artists I listen to have broadened greatly thanks to this feature. #POPMUSW22
@chrayl4 I agree with you! For the reasons you mentioned, most of the music I listen to is either old, or not what would be considered typical. A lot of recent popular music is very difficult to engage with as it all seems to all have the same themes, and lacks substance.
@oneonlysophie Interesting point! I wonder if it influences more people to actively participate in this lifestyle, or if it just leads them to believe that the lifestyle is desirable. #POPMUSW22
A "false need" made by pop music is the beauty standard. Though I believe music appeals to an often passive audience, it's interesting that some artists have realized the impact they may have, and have attempted to make change. An example is "Scars to Your Beautiful". #POPMUSW22
