Outrageous.
Without precedent for a very good reason: it’s profoundly undemocratic to call an election when the main opposition party is in the process of selecting a Leader.
@raytomlin You need to make a correction. Lucy Maloney didn’t walk out in protest. She stayed and voted no to the plebiscite. Councillor Bligh walked out before the vote if I recall.
@LennyNanZhou during debate on taking money away from building retrofits that, in part, fund retrofits to protect vulnerable from possibly dying during heat events, says don’t be “emotional” and that it creates “division”. We need more emotion. Anger directed to positive change.
@BradWestPoCo Mayor West. Thanks for posting your take on this almost 10-year-old land claim. Phoned, DMd, and texted you three weeks ago for Globe re this but didn't hear anything (though Surrey, Delta, West Van, Victoria, etc. responded). Any update on the below? https://t.co/TS35kjXTGB
Instead of spreading this settlement so thin, they should have to provide a loaf of bread a week to all those in need. Think about donating the $50 bucks if you can afford to. https://t.co/V1OJBJPzGH
@StewartPrest@VancouverSun Agree. There is a misunderstanding how muni budgets work. They aren’t like a prov budget that can run deficits, borrow to fund priorities, spend across mltple years, and announce programs w/out detailing every change. A muni budget is a precise operational blueprint.
@LennyNanZhou Cllr Zhou, since you want discussion grounded in facts, can you advise how much of the Parks Board 2026 Budget will be self-generated revenues and how much is tax funded? If you can't, I will imagine you will not support this budget but ask staff to come back with detail.
@floydmarinescu@pmcondon2 I’m with you on Land Value Tax. It was more a response to the post, which I thought was simplistic. Thanks for sharing the link. I’d be interested in hearing the discussion in Vancoucer.
I agree with Cllr Zhou that a less ideological and more evidece-based, pragmatic (I'll add principled) government that is financially responsible, is possible. Unfoutunatly, in Vancouver, we have to wait until Oct 2026 when ABC is no longer the majority on Council. @OneCityVan
Premier Eby @Dave_Eby said in a UDI event two weeks ago that the public service has grown too big. Last year, the BC government cut 800 positions and began reducing expenditure across non-vital services.
Same as the provincial government and other municipalities, at the City of Vancouver, we’re taking exactly similar steps — streamlining operations and changing how services are delivered while protecting core services!
Less ideology, more evidence-based with pragmatic approach, a financial responsible government is possible!
Hard to support a plan this light on details. No clear information on costs, revenues, or risks…and no focus on affordable housing. When the greatest need is affordable, non-market homes, public land should be used to meet that greatest of needs. We can do better.
Today, staff presented a thoughtful plan to create a Government Business Enterprise (GBE) that would deliver up to 4,000+ rental homes on City-owned land.
✅ ABC supported it.
❌❌ The opposition voted against it! ❌❌
This plan uses City assets to build homes and generate much-needed revenue. It is about getting housing built for firefighters, nurses, and families who need more rental options.
While others say no, ABC is focused on building homes and keeping Vancouver affordable for everyone.
