Vitalik’s proposal for partial statelessness, verifying blocks while storing only a relevant subset of state, is essential for scaling without losing the ability to run a personal, private, and trust-minimized node.

At @helios_layer1, this problem space shaped our architecture from the beginning.

By default, Helios nodes are not required to run in full archival mode to function properly. For example, we prune EVM receipts automatically after X blocks, drastically reducing storage needs. Execution works without the overhead of full history, unless explicitly opted into. This makes running a node accessible without sacrificing correctness.

Local-first design is core to our network:

Any node can serve RPC locally, without depending on external providers.

State retention is configurable: users define what they want to store (EOAs, contracts, tokens), and the node maintains only that slice.

No need to persist global Merkle branches on all integrated Hyperion or maintain full historical state unless required.

Where we extend this model beyond Vitalik’s post is cross-chain validation.

Through Hyperion Modules, Helios nodes embed light clients of external chains like Ethereum, BNB, Polygon, and AVAX. These modules observe, validate, and propagate events like deposits and withdrawals.
They are active participants: signing transactions, verifying consistency, and maintaining data availability.

This cross-chain behavior is formally captured in I-PoSR: Interchain Proof of Stake and Reputation:

PoS anchors Helios with its native consensus.

PoRS (Proof of Restake) brings in economic security from external chains, fully slashable.

Reputation is earned by Hyperion-enabled nodes that correctly relay and sign external events. Reputation governs their rights, participation, and rewards.

In Helios, trust is not assumed; it’s measured.
Reputation decays over time, is earned per chain, and is required to participate in cross-chain consensus and asset bridging.

This model directly addresses the issues raised in @VitalikButerin's post:

Running a node that works without a full history

Trustless local RPC with no dependency on third-party infrastructure

Cross-chain data integrity, verified independently

Storage and state are minimized by default.

Helios brings these guarantees not just to Ethereum, but to every connected chain, without compromising on node operator sovereignty or protocol-level correctness.
