Last month, we brought together Community Legal Volunteers (CLVs), elders, cultural leaders, and local council leaders from Karamoja and West Nile to reflect on their journey, share lessons, and renew their commitment to advancing access to justice.
Beyond the discussions and shared experiences, it was a chance to celebrate the remarkable work of these community champions, the first point of contact for many women, girls, and vulnerable people seeking justice in some of the countryโs hardest-to-reach communities. Supported by ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ช๐ณ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ช.

Last month, Our Nebbi Field Office, with support from @unwomenuganda, joined the @JudiciaryUG and other justice sector actors for a Court Open Day at Nebbi Chief Magistrateโs Court under the theme, โ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ฌ, ๐๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ.โ
The event created a valuable platform for residents to engage directly with justice sector institutions, better understand court processes, seek legal information, and raise concerns affecting their access to justice. FIDA-Uganda was proud to provide legal information and guidance alongside other legal aid service providers, reaffirming our commitment to empowering communities with knowledge of their rights. ๐
One of the dayโs key highlights was the @JudiciaryUGโs commitment to bringing justice closer to the people through reforms such as expanded use of alternative dispute resolution, mobile court sessions, digitization of court processes, and efforts to operationalize a High Court circuit in Nebbi. Access to justice begins with access to information, and partnerships like these help bridge that gap. ๐ค

Land continues to be at the centre of disputes and conflict for many families, with women, children, and other vulnerable beneficiaries often bearing the greatest burden, particularly under customary land tenure systems. ๐ก
Recognising the growing challenges arising from the sale or transfer of family land without the knowledge or consent of spouses, children, or other family members, the @ministry_lands issued guidance in June 2024 requiring verification of family consent before certain customary land transactions can proceed, especially where land is communally occupied or used by households.
