2 firefighters were injured last week in Germany, and a motorway closed for several hours following a fire at a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) facility.
The fire continued for around 10 hours, forcing the closure of the nearby A31 motorway due to heavy fire gasses (smoke), and also impacted many local residents.
Unfortunately early reports indicate the injuries may have been preventable and were caused when firefighters opened the door to the BESS, remember when we see what we believe to be fire gasses at these facilities, there’s a high likelihood it’s actually a vapour cloud, the vapour cloud will be highly toxic, highly flammable and also highly explosive.
Opening doors on these facilities not only exposes us to significant heat and flames, it also has a high risk of a potential deflagration or vapour cloud ignition/explosion.
When more details come out and we understand what further learning can be obtained, I’ll try to post an update.

One from the archives (courtesy UL FSRI) that highlights flow path dangers when operating on below grade fires with the potential for failure of a below-grade door or window. We have injured/lost several firefighters in North America with similar conditions.

Congratulations to newly promoted Training Officer Leung!
TO Leung started with us in 2013, is a qualified Acting Captain, Shift Instructor and Platoon Training Coordinator and was promoted last week after successfully completing the promotional process.
Congratulations Tommy!
Today we remember the ultimate sacrifice made by Phoenix Firefighter Brett Tarver. We will also highlight the recovery process that ensued and taught us so much. His loss will never be forgotten by the American Fire Service. #BrettTarver#BlueCardCommand#Brunacini#FireCommand
On #InternationalWomensDay we proudly recognize the incredible contributions of our female firefighters, inspectors, educators, administrators, district chief & deputy. Your strength, skill, & leadership are essential to our team. Thank you for all you do! #WomenInTheFireService
During conferences, I frequently come across people who express their frustration about the lack of progress in the fire service. My advice to them, stay calm and present fact-based science to support your ideas. Establish yourself as a problem-solver.
Caledon Fire won 3 games in a row to make it into the semi-finals. The guys played hard but got put out this morning. Proud of the Team and representing CFES at the 48th Annual Southern Ontario Firefighters Hockey Tournament #caledonfire#caledonfire@CaledonPFFA@CaledonFireES

Got plans this Family Day weekend? Stop by Bolton Fortino’s this Sunday (9:00am - 5:00pm) to meet the @CaledonFireES CNOY team! Come support our #CaledonCNOY24 heroes, give our brave firefighters a high five, snap a cool selfie & maybe win a special prize! https://t.co/P56SqcgldZ
Every firefighter has their own unique tips and tricks, making experience a valuable teacher. Caledon has an impressive training cadre, and it was wonderful to spend time in the company of others who share our passion for firefighting.
Roof removal when it unnecessary is a very amateur point of focus. Taking the roof/removing glass that doesn’t need to be is a hallmark of training on cars without a dent in them (it exposes patients to cold, which kills trauma patients). Use rams, cut the seats, get them moving

This evening #FCFRD responded to a utility emergency in the 3800 blk of S George Mason Dr. An explosion occurred while crews were working. Thankfully, our firefighter is okay

These fires are happening about once a week in box structures. Is your department prepared?

Why is it that every video or photo we see of these blankets being used, there’s often a severe lack of regard from many or all on scene for correct PPE and/or RPE?
Here we see 4 people without BA, 2 with BA but not under air (so might as well not even have it on their back), and most don’t even have the correct PPE on.
Crews really need to get better at this sort of thing, for anyone who’s not sure why this is so wrong, look at the below links on the increased cancer risks to firefighters:
