This new study recruited 242 children and adolescents (aged 8 - 16 yrs) to validate and test the reliability of a submaximal step test to estimate VO2max 🔍
The step test was 3-min continuous stepping up by 15 cm at 22 steps/min following an auditory metronome stimulus 👣
Heart rate was recorded at the end and was used for the predictive equation below…
VO2max (L·min) = 0.6394241 +(−0.0092567 * heart rate in bpm) + (0.0216444 * weight in kg)+(0.878444 * height in cm)
This was compared to formal VO2max test scores 🏃♀️
Results 📊
Predicted VO2max from the step-test correlated strongly with measured VO2max (r = 0.86) 📈
Therefore, this step test could be a useful tool for those working with youth athletes to assess VO2max without the need for expensive equipment ✅
