New paper from the lab out in @ScienceMagazine - take a look to find out how cryptic splicing can be exploited to develop novel therapies for ALS.
Very exciting work led by @OscarWilkins16, it’s been great to be a part of it!
Our paper on cryptic splicing-controlled protein expression, which we hope will inspire safer and more adventurous gene therapy approaches for ALS and FTD, has been published in @ScienceMagazine https://t.co/YriG3I4ILF
#RepeatExpansionDisorders are up to three times more common than current estimates. Underdiagnosis or reduced penetrance?

In this latest blog I discuss the progress in the Alzheimer's disease and Down syndrome field from the recent @t21rs conference in June!
Read or listen below!
We find TDP-43 loss to cause presynaptic defects, which are rescued by ASOs correcting a single cryptic exon in UNC13A.
Surprising effect of just one cryptic exon and promising strategy for ALS!

Our new paper modelling #mitochondrial disease in Drosophila is now available. UPR and #ATF4 activation in the brain depends on the severity of mitochondrial complex I loss. https://t.co/n6FgPpBx5Q
TDP-43 loss causes mis-splicing in ALS/FTD. We now show it also induces widespread cryptic 3'UTRs. This increases RNA stability, translation and function of ELK1 and other TFs. Also provides novel targets for biomarker and therapeutics development.
