the satirical film "Idiocracy" (Mike Judge, 2005) was probably funnier as well as more far-fetched at the time of its release in a pre-MAGA America in which the political leadership of George W. Bush was evidently viewed, by some observers at least, as the prelude to an era of profound ignorance & stupidity. how unnerving to see a film in which a grotesque administration in a ramshackle White House includes brain-damaged cabinet members & a rap-star president & the slack-jawed dull-eyed populace is riotously amused by crude games/executions on the White House lawn that resemble gladiatorial combats. Mike Judd & cohort were naively optimistic to set their satire of a vulgar, intellectually diminished America in 2505; little did they know that by 2026 America an anti-intellectual, anti-scientific, anti-education & anti-democratic cult would have established political power & that satire itself--humor, comedy--would be challenged by each day's breaking news.
