As a part of @fshottsf class, I had the opportunity to watch The Great Debaters. This particularly compelling movie follows the experiences of an all-Black debate team as they navigate institutional racism and segregation during the Jim Crow era.

[Aluet Deng @deng16790]

I find Melvin Tolson to be a very strong leader because he was cognizant of the harsh realities his students would face in a racist society. He pushed them beyond their limits, knowing they would have to work harder to compete with students who had greater privileges. @fshottsf

Looking forward, I wonder how do we as a society continue to ensure that all students have equal access to opportunities to succeed. Is this just educational issue, or should this be a holistic effort with other systems in mind? @fshottsf

Your calling is proven in seasons when giving up seems easier.

I’ve learned that calling isn’t tested on the easy days. It shows up when the season gets tough and quitting looks tempting.

I learned that after the debaters run Melvin B Tolson went adn served as a poet in liberia😲😲😲😯 I enjoyed Melvin B Tolson he was appropriately sharp. I wonder if poecism is still used in debates today or if it's nuanced @fshottsf

After watching The Great Debaters, I learned about Melvin B. Tolson and the Wiley College debate team who competed against Harvard during segregation and proved they belonged on that stage. @fshottsf

[TomJustice @TomJusticeHvH]

I had a lot of opinions about the movie and about the people. In my opinion James farmer Jr was the most talented if he was confident. The others were not as powerful when they are on doing their best as he was, and I think he was the best. @fshottsf

In @fshottsf class last week we watched the Great Debaters. I learned a whole lot of the troubles that colored people had to face back in the day.

@fshottsf

I admired the team’s bravery fighting racism in the 1930s during segregation. I learned about Wiley College and how debate challenged injustice and discrimination in America. How can people today use their voices for change and stand up for what’s right?
