❓ Why do some cancers keep dodging our best immune therapies?

➡️ Scientists have discovered a trick tumors use: they decorate their surface with special sugars (called glycans) that act like “invisibility cloaks,” shutting down immune cells through receptors called Siglecs.

➡️A recent study published in @Nature Biotechnology introduces an innovative strategy to counter this effect: antibody–lectin chimeras (AbLecs). These engineered molecules are designed with dual functionality:

- One component selectively binds to cancer cells
- The other disrupts glycan-mediated inhibitory signaling

➡️As a result, immune cells such as macrophages and natural killer (NK) cells regain and enhance their tumor-killing activity. In preclinical mouse models, AbLecs demonstrated superior tumor reduction compared with standard antibody therapies.

➡️ Bonus: AbLecs can be customized to target different cancers and even combine two immune checkpoints (like PD-1 and Siglec) in one molecule. This could open new doors for patients who don’t respond to current immunotherapies.
