Canada’s ratification of the Belém do Pará Convention is a historic step that strengthens our Hemisphere’s commitment to prevent, punish, and eradicate violence against women.

With 33 States Parties, the Convention remains the most widely ratified treaty in the Inter-American system and a cornerstone for women’s rights in the Americas.

Through the Inter-American Commission of Women @CIMOEA, the @OAS_official will continue working with member states to promote its effective implementation and build a region where all women and girls can live free from violence.

Aujourd’hui, @RechieValdez et moi avons annoncé que le Canada a ratifié la Convention interaméricaine sur la prévention, la sanction et l’élimination de la violence faite aux femmes (Convention de Belém do Pará) — le premier traité international consacré à la lutte contre la violence faite aux femmes. Cette étape importante réaffirme l’engagement du Canada à faire progresser les droits de la personne et à bâtir un avenir où les femmes, les filles et les personnes de diverses identités de genre peuvent vivre à l’abri de la violence et participer pleinement à la société.

Violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. Preventing it, responding to it, and addressing its root causes requires sustained commitment at every level.

Today, @RechieValdez and I announced that Canada has ratified the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (Belém do Pará Convention) — the first international treaty dedicated to addressing violence against women. This important step reinforces Canada’s commitment to advancing human rights and building a future where women, girls, and gender-diverse people can live free from violence and participate fully in society.
