During Stalin’s Show Trials, one of the charges against the defendants was that they’d read subversive material, which of course was illegal and punishable by death.
But this posed a problem for the judges: even if it was only to confirm that it was indeed subversive material, reading said material was still dangerous. And so, on the margins next to the evidence of subversive material, the judges would pencil in "Did not read but disapprove."
Just as bees make beehives, leftists reinvent Stalinism from first principles every time they are allowed to have power.
The average person will not believe this because if they did believe it, it would compel them to do brutal things.
The problem is that they do not possess the ability to do those things, and that conflict better what they're morally obliged to do and what they're capable of, causes them psychic distress.
The solution is simply to say "this isn't happening" and all of their distress goes away.
My gauge for the success of deportations is my local Walmart
It's not just the customers, there isn't a single employee who speaks English
The store isn't in some ethnic ghetto, it's a big box retail chain geared to average Americans and its basically an English no-go zone
We mock Europeans about this but this is the reality in the US and it isn't changing
It is full of illegals every single day and no one is being deported, they're all siting there cashing government benefits speaking a foreign language
I'll believe we're actually doing deportations when these people are scared to walk into a major retail store, when I can hold a conversation in English with at least one person who works there
Until then, please stop gaslighting me
We're nearing the end of era, Grace is still young & she won't like what comes next.
For more than a century, wealthy "progressives" (really Marxists if they are at all intellectually aware), have been able to live the best of both worlds - but no more, an inflection point

I went to a tiny cow college in the Midwest because their baseball/academic scholarship offer left with me the least amount of debt.
I now report to a Yale grad, who himself reports to a Yale grad. My colleague went to Harvard. Another one is an MIT Sloan MBA. There are a bunch of folks roaming the building who are Ivies, Stanford, and other elite universities.
But push comes to shove, the guys sitting at the table who are making decisions—not necessarily those with titles who do the workaday business of the building, but those actually in the room for the gritty, difficult work of national and global governance—are there because they graduated from the school of hard knocks.
The only credential that matters in a crisis, the only reason a kid like me who came from the bottom (by the Laptop Class's standard) gets to sit at the big boys' table 20 years after matriculation, is how much I have learned from the beatings, failures, and crucibles in my adulthood.
People who hide behind degrees and institutional elitism gatekeep because they would be totally exposed as hacks without the shield of a piece of paper and their comrades in Credential Solidarity.
@RamboVanHalen Having spent almost 20 years of my life on tuna longliners let me assure you that the novelty of breakfast sushi wears out after two days. After 10 days of breakfast sushi you start having legitimately potnographic dreams about bacon & eggs.
I know there are people tempted to treat Messing with some grace here. To be perfectly honest, I am one of them. I know that she and other NY lefties like Michael Rapaport didn't support Mamdani; they actively opposed him.
HOWEVER...
The Debra Messings of the world have spent their entire adult lives cultivating the same hatred of America and American values that leads to a Mamdani.
They pushed the insane immigration policies that are directly responsible for NYC electing an anti-American, Communist, Muslim extremist. There's no way Mamdani would have won if only native New Yorkers had voted in the last election. But if you ever tried telling Messing in the past that mass importation of people who have no affinity for America and never wanted to assimilate was, you know, maybe a bad idea, she would call you a Nazi.
And if you criticized leftist policies that led so many of these new "New Yorkers" to believe, beyond all reason, that Mamdani could give them all free stuff, Messing would be the first in line to denounce you as a racist, sexist, whatever "-ist" she could think of.
Now, of course, that the inevitable has happened with Mamdani's dumpster fire of an administration, Messing, who has a net worth of $25 million, is free to escape to Iceland to enjoy the Northern Lights and a hot spa. Millions of New Yorkers are not.
She may not have supported Mamdani over the past year, but over the past 20 years, she effectively has supported him, pushing for this exact outcome to take place in what was once the greatest city in the world.
Oh, and here's the kicker. Messing will not learn one single thing from this. She will go right back to pushing insane, unsustainable leftist policies and politicians, and denouncing anyone to the right of Castro as a bigot and a "threat to democracy." She will do this because she does not have to reap what she has sown. She has the means to run away, leaving everyone else in the disastrous wake of her rhetoric.
Enjoy your vacation, Deb. But maybe take some time to develop a little self-awareness. You feel like New York is on fire and has betrayed you? You have been betraying New York and laying down the kindling for that fire for as long as you have had a public voice.
@johnkonrad When I find myself doing introductions in some multinational group I never say “I’m an American”
I just say: — (name), USA.
I’ve found saying “USA” instead of “America” let’s them know where I stand on a whole lot of things w/ the added benefit of making them squirm even more
😁
Rwandan migrant Emmanuel Abayisenga had his asylum application to France rejected multiple times since submitting it in 2012. Despite orders for deportation, he remained in the country illegally.
The priests trusted him with the cathedral keys, putting him in charge of locking up and caretaking. After he set the building on fire, destroying the organ and organ loft, Father Maire took him in, offering him shelter in his own home while awaiting trial.
He then murdered Father Maire.
Europe in a nutshell.
Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, applied martial law and military trials to civilian dissenters, & shut down opposition newspapers
Wilson applied the Sedition act to criminalize war opposition, jailed dissenters for 'disloyal' speech, waged the first 'red scare' raids against/expulsions of communists
FDR interned the Japanese, setup small-f fascist state control of the economy (price-fixing, quotas, 'Blue Eagle' economic loyalty-tests & enforcement), stayed in power till death
FLASHBACK: Pennsylvania voters elected former convict Hanif Johnson as magisterial district judge despite three prior jail terms for drug and gun charges. Johnson completed a four-week training program instead of getting a law degree. Earlier this month Johnson shot a stray pit bull puppy.

Can use everyone’s help and signal on this.
Earlier today one of my friends and an SMC family member told me about a local veteran in need.
This is Claire Atwell I’m with in the picture.
He is 98 years old and still in fighting shape. He is an Army Korean War veteran and also served in the Navy.
His identity was stolen and his accounts have been drained as well as other fraudulent loans and things happening with the identity theft.
He didn’t have much to begin with and now he is a little desperate while the AG and local police sort things out.
We are taking the next couple days to raise some money for him to help until it’s straightened out.
Any amount helps and it all goes to him.
If you can’t help we ask you to share. He doesn’t have anyone to help him

We had a good thing, Britain.
A really good thing.
You taught us this game. Mahan studied you. We just wrote bigger checks.
The deal was simple. We spend the trillions. Fight the hard wars. We even let you sit out Vietnam. And you? You hold the chokepoints you already own. You run Lloyd’s. Ships in the narrows, insurance on the hulls.
That’s all you had to do and we would back your interests with the strongest military and financial markets in the world.
That was the deal.
Now look at you.
You gave up Aden. Fine. You kept Diego Garcia so we could reach it with bombers. Now you’re giving that away too. To a Chinese client state.
You built Israel to guard Suez. Now your Foreign Secretary threatens to arrest their PM.
You built a base nearby to back it up. Iran hit your base in Cyprus. You didn’t have one warship in the Mediterranean. Spain got there first. Spain.
You gave up Hong Kong but backed Taiwan. Now you’re letting China build the largest embassy in Europe on top of London’s fiber-optic cables. We gave you Five Eyes. You gave Beijing a SIGINT platform in the heart of the City.
Gibraltar. Three hundred years. Actual sieges. Now the Spanish run your border checks.
You lost South Africa but kept the Falklands so we can overfly the Magellan Strait. Argentina could probably take that with rowboats today.
Your king kept ownership of the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand navies to fill the gaps. Those navies are now a laughing stock.
Your warships and bombers patrolled the GIUK gap. Now you don’t have enough but you also don’t want us buying Greenland. Fine. You do it. With what?
We gave London the @IMOHQ to regulate shipping, you backed the EU agenda to carbon tax every ship to build woke UN slush fund.
Iran closed Hormuz. In the ‘80s, 540 ships got hit. Lloyd’s never blinked. Because your navy was there. Now Lloyd’s cancels. Because it isn’t.
You scrapped your only amphibious ships. Sold them. To Brazil. You have more admirals than warships.
You built two light carriers but they keep springing leaks and you don’t have enough escort ships to support them.
The English Channel. Stopped Napoleon. Stopped Hitler. Now you can’t stop rubber dinghies.
You had one job.
Have the warships, diplomatic backbone and insurance to support shipping through the straits.
That’s it. That’s all we asked.
And you blew it. Chokepoint by chokepoint. Called it progress.
Now hundreds of ships are stuck in the Persian Gulf and the world is blaming us.
But that’s ok. All those solar panels you bought from China will keep you warm in that dreary weather I guess.
