One thing I've noticed as an Asian is how some discussions about "POC representation" seem to revolve almost entirely around Black and white people, as though other people of color barely exist.
And here's what really bothers me: Asian characters, especially light-skinned characters in anime, sometimes get treated as if they're white by default. Their ethnic and cultural identities are conveniently overlooked when someone decides to race-swap them.
I'm not saying every Black creator does this. I'm talking about those who demand respect for Black representation while dismissing the importance of Asian representation. That double standard makes my skin crawl.
Reinterpretation? Absolutely fine. You want to draw an Asian character and explore what they'd look like if they were Black? Go ahead. That's creative freedom.
But there's a difference between reinterpretation and identity erasure.
When you know a character's ethnic and cultural background, yet decide none of that matters and can simply be replaced, while simultaneously demanding that everyone respect the original racial identity of Black characters, that's a fucking double standard.
Why should Asian representation be treated as disposable when Black representation is considered something that must be protected?
And what exactly is the reasoning here? "We've suffered historical injustice, therefore our demands are inherently justified, and even when our actions affect other marginalized groups, our experiences should take priority"?
Because that's not equality. That's just another hierarchy with a different group at the center.
Having experienced racism doesn't make someone incapable of perpetuating it against others. And fighting for your own representation doesn't give you the right to dismiss someone else's.
If respecting racial and cultural identities matters, then it should matter regardless of whose identity we're talking about.
