@chrisbharrison I think you can safely say that THIS season of the bachelor is the most dramatic season yet...and you're the reason why. ๐ But I am looking forward to you returning to the show later on, after some reflection!
@TMSBWagner Usually what my district does is mail out double-sided flyers (One side Spanish, one English) to students' home addresses. Yet there are families that speak only Mixteco and wouldn't necessarily understand it. I think email format that included Mixteco translation would help!
A5: I think SMJUHSD's parents are aware that the technology students are using is illusive, but aren't informed about the risks of Big Data or educational data--not at parent meetings, nor in the handbook-- it's even less accessible to parents of minority students. #SummerEdTech
@visualprint_dt Thanks for bringing this up! I totally thought about the Zoom discussion when the FaceApp privacy concerns came about. Made me glad that I didn't download/agree to something for the hype, for once...
@the_math_gal I know, I was shocked to hear it too. My Read 180 consultant told me a couple months ago that students who took "too long" on certain questions would not receive full points for that answer -- and to think, I used to tell my students to "take their time" on the test! Not anymore.
A3: When students take the Read 180 Lexile test, the longer it takes for students to answer questions, the fewer points they'll receive. This is problematic for students with special needs and learning disabilities who may need more time; it affects score accuracy. #SummerEdTech
A6: I love the point brought up in the article -- just as drugs must be extensively proven safe and effective for FDA approval (erring on the side of caution to protect human subjects) -- why aren't these principles applied to student data?Students = human subjects! #SummerEdTech
A4: I feel that the most vital category in safeguarding student privacy is the third, having to do with the laws outlining legitimate educational uses, etc. Unfortunately, not all companies/districts will work to protect students' data unless it is mandated by law. #SummerEdTech
A2: My district is adamant about analyzing test scores from the ELPAC and Smarter Balance exams, mainly in an attempt to ensure their district dashboards are in the green for each category. Most students/parents are uninformed about how this data will be used. #SummerEdTech
A1: I was moderately informed that "free" apps online are paid for with my data. However, I didn't realize how this applied to students' education. Now I worry about learning analytics and how they may suppress students' abilities rather than expanding them. #SummerEdTech
@visualprint_dt Great question -- I believe made steps in the direction in my TravelSmart class by having students participate in a 2-person group project for their National destinations. When the National Project is complete, students do a gallery walk to explore others' projects and critique.
A3: My biggest takeaway was that students need guidance to use technology in a way that connects them and their interests with others, rather than isolating them. We must facilitate an environment where students use tech to create, collaborate, & thrive! #SummerEdTech
@Jenna74653966 I absolutely love the Genius Hour component of your Action Research and I'm so interested in your data and results. What a great way of marrying students' interests and research/literacy skills.๐๐ผ
@visualprint_dt Thank you, Donna! One of the most rewarding parts of teaching this course is when I hear students say, "Woah, this is like, real life skills..." ๐๐ Students appreciate authentic tasks!
A2: I envision connected learning to be project-based/problem-based curriculum driven by the students' interests. Using tech equitably promotes acquiring knowledge, making meaning, and collaborating with others! My students practiced this in my TravelSmart class! #SummerEdTech
@SesseJanford Thank you so much! I worked hard last summer to update my TravelSmart class after going to last year's CUE conference and adding a Google Tourbuilder project along with the existing Google MyMaps platform. It's important for me to update it as technology improves!
@the_math_gal I knew you'd reply to this Gina! ๐๐ I thought the same thing. CUE is such a fantastic conference and I'm excited to see what ISTE has to offer. I know that attending will be a practical way of advancing my knowledge and implementation of the ISTE standards!
Hey #SummerEdTech, I just found out that the intervention English program that I teach, #Read180, presented at the #ISTE19 conference this summer! I would love to attend #ISTE20 next year (June 28-July 1) in Anaheim! Who's coming with me?
@AlissaCase16 Thanks Alissa! In my TravelSmart class, I have students complete the National Project (using Google Tourbuilder) in groups of two. I've fond this helps students navigate the app and support each other in their research and writing. Also -- they have a lot of fun!
