They choose to do so to reduce friction and make more money. It's mind boggling that they're permitted to offload this onto vendors.

Sugar tax on sweeteners in zero drinks + producers modified recipes to include 20% apple juice in every iced tea and lemonade and thus avoid even more tax. I used to buy my soft drinks in Germany, might stop bothering with it soon.
@simwire@16jms@waltuuuhr That's right, card issuers and banks have plenty of mechanisms that they forego because complicating the process would lose them users. It's their choice to do so and they should be responsible for their choices.
