I don't suppose this opinion will please any candidate in the election.
Head to head hustings are vehicles for a fight in a sack and not much more. They are a matter of spectacle and little else.
I have also never been convinced about candidates attending branch, brigade, regional or aggregate-members meetings either. Shocking? I'll explain:
Election pitches, whether declared or camouflaged, are just PR events.
The members MUST ALWAYS have the final say in a ballot. But elections shouldn't be about candidates making fine-sounding pledges.
Instead they should be (and used to be) geared around reps and officials assessing the candidates' previous practice; virtues and vices; delivery of previous pledges; likelihood of future delivery; character and integrity. Reps and officials are best placed to ADVISE members on such criteria based on their experience and observation.
As above, members will then act on that advice either by accepting it or not accepting it when exercising their vote at the appropriate time.
Candidates will always make fine-sounding pledges. There's very limited value in listening to them say great things about themselves.
⬆️A personal view.

Every firefighter will know a colleague who is or has battled cancer, mine was my Dad and that drives me to make our profession safer and better funded to protect the future generations of firefighters, including my son @Benwrighty__

How can it be right that a firefighter in Cornwall receives £15,000 less maternity leave pay than her equal in Derbyshire?
We're fighting for 52 weeks full maternity pay to end the postcode lottery firefighters face in the UK👇

Energy companies cash in while household bills soar. Water companies profit while pumping sewage into our rivers.
People have had enough. That's why public ownership is so popular.
Workers want utilities and services run for people, not profit. @mattwrack on BBC Politics Live👇
Today we unvelied a red plaque in honour of firefighters Alan Bannon and James Shears, who died in the line of duty at the Shirley Towers fire in 2010.
In 2012, an inquest into the incident established the need for improved safety measures to protect firefighters. [1/2]
🚨BREAKING | The Health and Safety Executive has conceded its approach to fire service Breathing Apparatus was inadequate, and has agreed to investigate the new (dangerous) policy.
This only happened because we fought for it.
Union advice to members remains the same. [1/2]
Fire safety is a serious matter and this situation calls for a grown-up approach.
As firefighters it is our duty to sound the alarm about the Bibby Stockholm.
We await a response from the Home Secretary in regard to our serious fire safety concerns.

"Oliver Dowden, the deputy PM, who made that smear, is not fit to lace the boots of firefighters when he's playing that guttter politics"

Breathing apparatus keeps firefighters alive when fighting fires.
Dangerous changes to how it's used at incidents will put firefighters at risk. We've put together a short explainer on what's at stake and how you can help us stop it 👇
