Our paper on forest canopy temperature is out in PNAS today! Forest canopies can get much warmer than air temperature, and as air temperatures increase it gets worse, with troubling implications for forest carbon uptake: https://t.co/uO3YAEHQVS
Deemed fit for reforestation owing to traditional perceptions, savannahs have an ecosystem of their own, and Prof. Mahesh Sankaran, Infosys Prize 2021 laureate in Life Sciences, has devoted his research to the cause of savannahs in India. @NCBS_Bangalore https://t.co/Qeu878FYBP
Following decades of sexual harassment and abuse at @stri_panama, my fellow women scientists & I are demanding widespread policy reforms at @smithsonian from @POTUS and the @WhiteHouseGPC. Please consider signing our letter in support of https://t.co/McqEsSOo7q @LauraLDunnEsq
@GlobalEcoGuy Tree planting is a major disturbance that has a net warming effect in boreal habitats and risks grassland and savanna biodiversity. Aside from the massive overinflated benefits, a significant portion of the global tree "restoration" would do vastly more harm than good.
@_LeMoog_ @macgupta123 @GlobalEcoGuy @PaulDJohnston Tree planting can be massively damaging to many natural ecosystems where it is planned. This is especially true for boreal regions where tree planting has a net warming effect and savannas where biodiversity and stored carbon are disturbed.
Who doesn’t want to stop climate change? Pretty much everyone except the US government agrees on that. But we're not going to stop climate change with just seedlings and fancy agriculture. We also need to reduce emissions. https://t.co/8XbMM4zOkl
Imagining that humans planting billions of trees can repair the biosphere, is akin to believing ten billion typewriter-weilding monkeys can replace lost classics after arsonists burn libraries stocking the last great books on the planet #IPBES#DIVERSITY https://t.co/GKJa72oK17
@kxlldiego @stavercarla @edyong209@jetjocko A significant portion of their estimated carbon drawdown comes from ecosystems where planting trees will actually have a net warming effect, e.g., boreal regions, or where tree planting will disturb natural biodiversity and carbon stores, e.g., grasslands and savannas.
ESA joined with other societies over the past 1.5 years to oppose visa restrictions and continues to do so. The NAS had a IVO program to serve as a resource on visa-related issues for scientists coming to the US.
