Spain's current, dogmatically anti-nuclear government insists on closing the country's largest nuclear plant in 2028. Article link in reply.

They're doing it even though:

The local area wants to keep the plant open.

It would devastate the local economy

It would increase power costs

It would would increase pollution and CO2 emissions

It would reduce grid reliability

The European Commission is telling member states to not close their nuclear plants, because they reduce reliance on fossil fuels and strengthen energy independence

(Greenpeace claimed that closing the plant will save money, but eveyone knows that that's a lie. Keeping existing nuclear plants running is THE least expensive clean source.)

The three Spanish energy companies that own the plant are asking the government to extend operation until 2030 (vs. 2028). Strikes me as a humble (cowardly?) stance. The plants should stay online for decades.

Perhaps they think a two year extension, for now, is the best they will be able to get. And live to fight another day? Perhaps there will be a new government by 2030. The next election is in 2027.
