@schlthss Unfortunately, the publicly available data DC provides at ward-level only goes back to 2008 (AFAIK). DC has changed quite a bit in the past 20 years and I'd imagine that we'd see an even more dramatic downward trend. I've heard similar stories in Columbia Heights, as well

Also, one bit that gets lost in the recall argument is that crime in wards 1 & 6 has dropped on avg during Nadeau/Allen's tenures. I'm not arguing that the crime spike last year wasn't real - nor do I think only Allen/Nadeau control crime, but that's basically the recall argument

The drop in crime wasn't a result of any increase in police staffing, either. Crime stayed below pre-Allen/Nadeau levels even after the reduction in 2020. I'm not assigning any causation to the '23 spike, but to look at the graph and say that Allen made DC less safe is unfounded.

@DCBikeHistory1 @FixCircle FWIW this is one of my favorite bits of infrastructure in the city and I hate the negativity here. It's opened up a lot of parts of the city for my friends who don't feel comfortable riding in the open streets and seeing even more connecting PBL infrastructure is great to see!

@maustermuhle It seems like it's a staffing issue from what I've read from @JWPascale in previous years, which is still persistent. DPW listed 11 vacant, approved booter positions in their '23 council oversight report. The few booters they have put up decent numbers but they're outnumbered.

Further, if harsh penalties are supposed to deter crime, opponents of the overhaul have yet to explain why current crime isn’t exactly being deterred by the penalties currently on the books. Top offense for carjacking is 40 years now, yet the spike is happening… now.
