Late last night, I had a two-hour call with my friend Kleddamag. We talked about everything from the Square Packing project we're working on together to life in general, and it was such a lovely chat!
But I also realized just how much I still struggle with the more technical parts of our conversations. Even just keeping up with the discussions in our Square Packing group chat and making sure I understand everything correctly can be quite a challenge for me, so I still turn to AI for help every now and then.
Still, I guess my English isn't doing too badly as a second language. I mean, I managed to chat entirely in English for two hours straight, and that's a little milestone for me.But it's not quite enough yet. I really wanna get to the point where I can use English as a working language without constantly feeling held back by the language itself.
Still a long way to go...
You got this,zhou
Square packing is a fun topic for AI proofs as it blends visuals and geometric intuitions with intense, systematic verification arguments.
Unlike some high-dimensional problems where you explore downhill in a vast open landscape, this rigid geometry problem feels like mapping a cave filled with sharp corners and deep, narrow crevasses.
I think mathematical proof may now extend to a more collaborative model like we've used here. It is very much more like open source collaboration we've used in software for years.
For anyone wanting to understand the proof: in addition to the repo from @ManassehA06 we have AI-written explainer docs on my site showing walking through the initial lower bounds, the strong lower bound, and the optimality proof.
The site also has a comprehensive survey and graphics of all known results, including dozens of other new results that have arisen from this collaborative effort, including significant new lower bounds from @evanbd and others.

The optimality of the packing for 11 squares has been formalized in lean thanks to Astra and Claude! Huge thanks to @ojoshe, @kleddamag, @wand_125, @guzhou0806, and @ctjlewis for aiding in the process.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. https://t.co/iG3Bnlzt2J
definitely an open and collaborative community.nice to exchange latest achievements and cowork with everyone there!
We're pushing the frontier of square packing with insane speed
