My statement with @RepMcGovern and @RepGaramendi:
We are deeply alarmed by increasing violence in Ethiopia, including the Ethiopian military strike last week on an aid convoy delivering assistance in Tigray.
The 2022 Pretoria Agreement that silenced the guns in Northern Ethiopia committed all parties to ceasing hostilities, protecting civilians, allowing humanitarian access to those affected, and undertaking comprehensive transitional justice to hold those responsible for human rights abuses and violations responsible. Unfortunately, this agreement has not been upheld, and these conditions have not been met.
This increased conflict threatens the entire country and the region as a whole, which is already reeling from the previous war in Northern Ethiopia and the devastating conflict in Sudan. Ordinary civilians are bearing the brunt of this violence.
We urge all parties in Ethiopia to immediately recommit to peace negotiations and uphold their responsibilities under the Pretoria Agreement. Ethiopia’s neighbors and the international community must work to defuse tensions and facilitate peace.
We also urge the U.S. State Department to work with all parties to end the violence and hold those responsible accountable. The people of Ethiopia deserve peace and justice.
Ethiopia’s Indiscriminate Bombing of #Tigray Continues
Axum and nearby areas have been hit by repeated Ethiopian airstrikes in the past 24 hours. A bomb fell near the airport and another struck a school. It’s worth noting that thousands of IDPs in Axum are sheltering in schools.
As the Ethiopian military resumes airstrikes in Tigray, worries mount that it will also resume its indifference to civilian life as show in the last round of armed conflict. https://t.co/3zyIqOmi1c
Pope Leo prays for Ethiopia's Tigray region.
In his remarks at the General Audience, the Pope appealed to all parties to cease hostilities, noting that “only honest engagement can lay the foundations for lasting peace.”
The situation in Tigray is deteriorating considerably. In recent hours, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF) have intensified their clashes with the Ethiopian army. Numerous skirmishes have been reported along the Tekeze River in western Tigray, in the Wolkayt area on the border with the Afar region, and in various parts of Amhara.
Since August, there's been an escalation in airstrikes in Tigray.
The resumption of hostilities in northern Ethiopia heightens concerns about unlawful attacks and the grave threat posed to civilians.
HRW's @LaetitiaBader spoke to @BBCNews' Focus on Africa:
Tigray civil society groups release a list of some of the Ethiopian airstrikes in Tigray over the past 2 months. @hrw reports that 13 civilians, 7 of them children were wounded in the August 20 strike in Tigray's capital.

All bank accounts opened in #Tigray are terminated. This triggered panic among young Tigrayans who recently moved to the capital fleeing forced conscription in Tigray.
For many, these accounts are their only access to their savings and financial security.
Following a predictable escalation of fighting in northern Ethiopia, new @hrw report into an indiscriminate airstrike on August 20 in Mekelle that left 13 civilians injured underscores need for pressure on parties to guarantee monitoring, aid access https://t.co/yyQvb4Ifje
