@alt5wisco #UWJ201 #323 I believe a really important skill would have to be research and interpersonal communication. I haven’t necessarily seen someone in PR do the research, but I can imagine it is very important when trying to figure out what to promote and how to build relationships.
@adler_maddy#uwj201 #323 I honestly think that a lot of times I am actually not too affected by advertisements because they tend to annoy me, so I do not pay much attention to them. However, they are hardest for me to avoid on instagram because I use that app the most.
#UWJ201 #323 We learned in class that PR works to build a mutually beneficial relationship between the organization and varying public’s- should advertisements also attempt to build beneficial relationships? Or is that not necessarily their purpose?
@EmmaGoshin #uwj201 #323 That’s a good question. I think they definitely have individual importance as it pertains to persuasion, however I think all of them are equally as import to consider. I believe context has a big impact on that. They should be tied together AND treated separately.
@aiello_dom#uwj201 #323 I have definitely initially believes something a reliable source has claimed because they broke it. Persuasion is powerful, as is trust in specific sources. It definitely helps when other sources back it up— but trustworthy sources have an impact on my beliefs.
#uwj201 #323 My question for you: Do consumers benefit from seeing ads? The New York Times article we read this week brought this up and I am having a hard time deciding for myself. The context in which it is interpreted can definitely impact this question.
@AlexaRappaport#uwj201 #323 I think it is time that social media corporations work to either control what news is being put out there OR they must be more up front about their news being more concerned with entertaining and less about providing factual information.
@evargold#uwj201 #323 I do not know if synonymous is the word I would use to describe this- however I totally see your point. I think there is a fine line between entertainment news and what should be considered hard news.
#uwj201 #323 Social networks have the potential to distribute such powerful, factual, news in such a short period of time. Especially to so many audiences. Instead of allowing entertainment news on apps such as Facebook, they should monitor and put out what we need to hear.
@MarleyGarfield#uwj201 #323 I think that journalists can’t TRULY properly grasp the concerns of the communities... many of them come from a very specific demographic and thus can not properly represent the opinions of everyone through their own opinion.
#j201 #323 The way of skeptical knowing is great for journalists when writing a piece. However... I can’t help but think: do readers already engage in this act/SHOULD we be engaging in this act? Or is it the journalists job?
@Kayla31879264#uwj201 #323 I like how you brought this up and completely agree! I think it is really cool to see how pressure works to encourage journalists to get stories out. However, it can also impact the verifiability of a piece.
@TaylorSprouse9#uwj201 #323 Social media is a private entity, so they can decide for themselves. However- I do think they have a lot of power as a result that can most definitely be abused... especially if the platform favors one partisan over another.
@ishaan_chadha @davalos#uwj201 #323 I think one way other newsrooms can increase audience trust is by pulling quotes from people all along the political spectrum- not just one sided.
#uwj201 #323 One recommendation made in a reading this week for media covering the 2020 election was to make quality coverage more widely accessible to expand publics for news... do you think this was achieved? If not, how can we work towards it?
@EmmaGoshin #uwj201 #323 I think social media is a spot where opinion is everywhere. As a result, people who have a big following and influence a great number of people (celebrities, etc.) can push people to have certain opinions.
@Tori52074247 #uwj201 #323 You make a very good point. I agree. I think our media has fallen short of the main functions of journalism recently. This is something we must get better at in order to better represent and educate the people.
#uwj201 #323 I have never really thought about how some of the news we get is educational, whereas some have no educational content. The Meghan Markle and Prince Harry example brought up in lecture resonated with me. Not everything we see necessarily teaches us.
