Today in Bangladesh, a woman was publicly abused by Jamaat-e-Islami and extremist militants. The video shows cold water being poured on her as an act of humiliation. The Yunus government itself represents extremists, which is why such abuse happens openly.

Her foreign opponents fixated on #SheikhHasina through a narrow lens: elections that didn’t meet Western democratic aesthetics, long incumbency, centralised power, human rights reports. All real issues, but treated in isolation, stripped of context. Bangladesh was judged as if it were Denmark with a turnout problem, not a fragile, densely packed state with a violent Islamist history and a traumatised political culture.

In doing so, three hard realities were ignored.

First, Hasina was a stabiliser, not a revolutionary hero, but a state-builder in a hostile environment. She kept Jamaat and its offshoots contained, maintained civil-military balance, protected minorities better than any realistic alternative, and kept Bangladesh economically and geopolitically predictable. Her western opponents knew this. They just chose to downplay it.

Second, they overestimated the “democratic opposition”. There was no credible, unified, liberal alternative waiting in the wings. Removing pressure from Hasina didn’t empower democrats. It empowered street power, radicals, and actors who thrive precisely when institutions weaken.

Third, there was the old habit of believing that toppling or delegitimising a strong incumbent automatically opens space for pluralism. History says the opposite. In divided societies, power vacuums don’t fill with moderates. They fill with the loudest, angriest, and most organised forces. Often religious, often violent.

These were destructive missteps. Not because Hasina was flawless, but because state collapse is always worse than imperfect order. Chasing democratic optics ended up accelerating a counterrevolution that hollowed out politics, normalised persecution, and destabilised an entire country.

This wasn’t values-driven paternalism . It was context-blind activism masquerading as strategy. And Bangladesh will pay for it long after the policy memos have been forgotten.

At Least 31 #AwamiLeague Leaders and Activists Died in #Custody Under the #Yunus-Led Interim Govt in 15 Months: Families Allege #Torture, Medical Neglect, and Denial of #Justice.

Since the Interim Govt led by Muhammad Yunus assumed office in Aug 2024, an alarming pattern of custodial deaths of political activists has emerged in #Bangladesh, with the Khulna Jubo League leader Jony’s death being the latest in an endless series of similar deaths.  

On 10 Oct, 2025, 45 y/o Joynal Abedin Jony became the 31st victim of custodial death associated with the AL in the past 15 months. The jail authorities claimed that Jony, who was the Joint Convener of 27 No. Ward Unit of Jubo League (AL’s youth wing) in Khulna Metropolitan, suffered a cardiac arrest on 9 Oct, following which he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment. He died while being transported to Dhaka from Khulna under custody of the jail authorities. Jony’s family timely alleged that timely treatment could have saved their loved one’s life. News:

This is not an isolated case. According to documented reports and testimonies from bereaved families, at least 31 leaders, activists, and supporters of the AL and its affiliated orgs have died while in the custody of law enforcement agencies or prison authorities over the past 15 months.

These deaths have occurred under highly disturbing circumstances, ranging from alleged torture during raids or interrogations to deliberate denial of adequate medical treatment in prisons and hospitals.

Families consistently report that authorities either ignored urgent health concerns or actively obstructed access to proper medical care, raising grave concerns of systematic abuse and neglect. Families have also alleged:

- Torture during interrogation leading to fatal injuries.

- Negligence or outright denial of medical treatment for critical conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illness etc.

- Intimidation and obstruction when families attempted to seek justice, including prevention from filing legal complaint.

Even troubling is the complete absence of accountability. To date, the Interim Govt has not initiated any official inquiry or investigation into these deaths, despite repeated appeals from affected families, civil society, and rights activists.

The pattern suggests not random negligence, but rather a systematic policy of repression targeting political opponents. Such actions not only constitute serious violations of fundamental rights under the Constitution of Bangladesh, but also amounts to violations of int’l human rights law, including the Convention Against Torture (CAT) 1984, which Bangladesh is a signatory to.

In light of these deeply concerning developments, human rights activists, civil society groups, and legal experts have urgently called on the Yunus-led Govt to:

- Establish an independent judicial inquiry into all custodial deaths, especially those of political activists, since Aug 2024.

- Ensure accountability by prosecuting law enforcement and prison officials found responsible for torture, neglect, or denial of medical care.

- Guarantee immediate medical access and legal rights to all detainees, regardless of political affiliation.

- Allow families to file cases freely and protect them from harassment or intimidation.

Since Yunus assumed office, credible reports indicate that more than 500 Awami League leaders and activists have been killed, while 28 opposition members have reportedly died in police custody or as a result of extrajudicial killings. To date, the victims’ families have been unable to pursue legal recourse, yet no public statement has been issued by @UNHCR_BGD or @GwynLewis12.

When the Awami League came to power in 2009, Bangladesh’s GDP was USD 93 billion. By 2024, it had risen to USD 450 billion. Over the past 15 years, the average growth rate has been 6–7 percent.

But if, as Yunus claims, USD 234 billion had been siphoned off, then today the GDP would have been USD 684 billion—meaning the growth rate would have been 10–11 percent annually. That would imply that the World Bank and all international organizations had been publishing false statistics.

Therefore, the claim of USD 234 billion being siphoned off is completely baseless.

Did @FT take this calculation into account before making and broadcasting the propaganda documentary, which promotes Yunus’s lies and attacks Sheikh Hasina’s government?
