@BrittHanlon6 Totally agree, auto tune can make anyone sound like a great singer. It can be disappointing to hear someone live and they don’t sound as good, lol! I also love live music and prefer it. It comes with a whole experience that you can’t get from streaming music!! #S22POPMUS
@melika_ahmadian Totally agree. Personally, I prefer live music because the experience is totally different than simply streaming music. It is much more emotional and raw when performed live!! Couldn’t agree more. #S22POPMUS
I have to disagree with Wald’s statement. I think that young people value and enjoy live music, including cover bands. I do think however, they would prefer to listen to the original artists perform the songs but nonetheless, live music is still fun! #S22POPMUS
@r0dfowler@tajsquires That is an interesting point! I can see how some people may not be completely on board with someone else performing their songs and releasing covers, regardless if credit is given. It was their own piece and their hard work! Really good point. #S22POPMUS
@sarahbutler913 Good point!! Inspiration is a huge part. Many artists are inspired by other artists, including covers. Taking inspiration from an original song and putting your own twist on it is still a valuable piece of music, as long as credit is given!! #S22POPMUS
Even though “Schlock” music is considered “cultural theft,” every piece of music wether it be a cover, or original is valuable and we shouldn’t be so quick to discredit it. Covers can provide different feelings than the originals. Give credit where credit is due!! #S22POPMUS
@Cameron49368604 This is a great point! Not only is he displaying emotion though the lyrics, but the breaking voice also adds an element of emotion to the song as well, making it easier to connect with. Connection in music is much more personal! #S22POPMUS
@JK22168 Totally agree, connection and relatability is super important when creating and listening to music; songs become more personal and meaningful! Great point! #S22POPMUS
The breaking voice used by Ray Charles is able to express raw emotion and desire for the woman he is singing about. If the song were sung without the breaking voice, it wouldn’t sound as raw and passionate. Great tactic to express emotion and sounds amazing as well!! #S22POPMUS
@Bowen_Wang926 I totally agree, AirPods have been a game changer for me. I also totally agree that there is a sort of pressure or expectation put on people by society to own these newly developed listening technologies. AirPods might be the most popular example of “social status.” #S22POPMUS
@tajsquires The discovering of new music is a really good point. I use Spotify to listen to music and it allows me to find new music by creating a playlist with songs they think I would like based on my most listened to songs. This is a super easy way to explore new music! #S22POPMUS
My family bought Spotify after years of using many different apps to stream music. Spotify has changed the way I listen to music by having pre-created playlists that are easily accessible including ones made for me based on music I listen to! #S22POPMUS#GameChanger
I think that listening technology influences society’s ideas about personal identity surrounding class specifically. Just one example might be that if someone has the new AirPods, they have a lot of money versus someone who still uses wired headphones are lower class. #S22POPMUS
That being said, not everyone thinks like this!! However, people may feel that these materialistic things set expectations that are making them feel as if they need to have the best set of headphones to show they have money or are high to middle class #S22POPMUS
@sarahmlamswood Exactly!! I began to think about specifically the young people who listen to popular songs that are degrading to women. Young people are easily influenced and may begin to become impacted by these false narratives.
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about false narratives created in popular music is the way women are portrayed, objectified and told how to act by many (not all) popular rap songs. #S22POPMUS
I also think that the audience of popular music is not particularly passive. Many people are vocal and expressive about their feelings on the popular music being created and are considered popular music now, twitter is a popular place to express such opinions! #S22POPMUS
I personally love when I can relate to an artists experiences shared through music! Many popular songs out now are so popular because tons of people can relate and feel similar ways! I would not consider this music “dumbed-down” at all!! #S22POPMUS
@BesmahTepagende I really like how you mentioned the idea of a “perfect figure” portrayed by popular media. Rap music in particular tends to play on that idea and set unrealistic standards for both men and women surrounding not only looks, but actions and expectations as well. Great post!
@britthomewood Totally agree with the blurred line between ‘want and need’ portrayed by popular media. I also absolutely agree that there is no superior form of music as everyone’s tastes are completely different!! Great way of putting it!
