Evolution of a bill:
Thanks to the work of local advocates, volunteers, and investigative journalist @SDUTmcdonald - on January 1, 2024, #AB268 added requirements for "a licensed health care provider and a licensed mental or behavioral health care provider" to the California Board of State and Community Corrections.
Here's how AB268 became law:
January 2021:
- #SanDiego volunteers increase pressure on local legislators to request an audit of San Diego jails, after the @sdut series "Dying Behind Bars" reports on the deaths of more than 140 people in local jails.
June 2021:
- Newly elected @asmakilahweber submits the audit request; it passes JLAC unanimously
February 2022:
- @CaStateAuditor announces findings of their investigation; Sheriff Gore resigns the same day
January 2024:
-#AB268 becomes law in #California- designed to protect people's health & safety and save lives in custody
