Governor Newsom has now signed #AB268 into law-meaning #Diwali is added to the list of state holidays! 🪔🪔
We thank @CAgovernor for recognizing this important festival and ushering in a new era of inclusion for Hindus in California. Huge shout out to Assembly Members Darshana Patel and @Ash_Kalra for sponsoring the bill. 🙏🏿
CoHNA is proud to have supported and brought broad Hindu support to this important bill through our grassroots #advocacy efforts.
Under the new law, community colleges and public schools can choose to close on Diwali, meaning Hindu children will now have the time to actually celebrate this special day and participate in the time-honored rituals it involves.

Every child deserves lunch at school—no exceptions.
That’s why Majority Leader @sandra4nv and Assemblymember @SheaBackusEsq introduced AB268 to guarantee permanent school lunches for Nevada students.
🥪🥗 The last time we brought this bill, Governor Lombardo vetoed it.

We won’t leave students hungry! Governor Lombardo, it’s time to pass AB268. Big shoutout to @sandra4nv for her hard work on this bill! #NVLeg #YESonAB268 #AB268
Evolution of a bill:
Thanks to the work of local advocates, volunteers, and investigative journalist @SDUTmcdonald - on January 1, 2024, #AB268 added requirements for "a licensed health care provider and a licensed mental or behavioral health care provider" to the California Board of State and Community Corrections.
Here's how AB268 became law:
January 2021:
- #SanDiego volunteers increase pressure on local legislators to request an audit of San Diego jails, after the @sdut series "Dying Behind Bars" reports on the deaths of more than 140 people in local jails.
June 2021:
- Newly elected @asmakilahweber submits the audit request; it passes JLAC unanimously
February 2022:
- @CaStateAuditor announces findings of their investigation; Sheriff Gore resigns the same day
January 2024:
-#AB268 becomes law in #California- designed to protect people's health & safety and save lives in custody
Thank you, @AsmAkilahWeber, for your efforts on #AB268, which would improve mental health care in correctional facilities – a key part of rehabilitation for incarcerated individuals. This crucial bill has passed the #CALeg!

Both the Senate and Assembly have passed #AB268 including NSHE classified AND professional employees. Thank you!
Let’s talk about #ab268 the bill for retention bonuses for state workers. Last night @NvFacAlliance offered an amendment and discussed why the bill needs to be changed to include all faculty *as originally intended*
Channeling Ross Perot, @ErvinKentM with his chart of @NSHE faculty salaries. 😉
Yellow = classified salary mean 50K
Blue = professional salary mean ~60K,
#NSHE staff were state workers when we took furloughs; treat us as state workers for retention bonuses.
Amend #AB268
@Nicole4Nevada #AB268 math saga continues...so what we are hearing is that the state also cannot afford to cover the taxes on their end... #nvleg
My colleagues in Carson City for @NevadaState #NVLeg legislative day.
Yes on #SB273 - #NevadaStateUniversity
Yes on #AB224 - collective bargaining for NSHE professional employees
Amend #AB268 to include hardworking @NSHE state employees on retention bonus bill
Great evening supporting President @DrPollard_NS and @NevadaState this evening up here in Carson! Looking forward to all the work we will do together for higher ed. #NVLeg
Tomorrow at 6pm #AB268 will be discussed in the #NVLeg. NFA will be there to say clearly that state workers absolutely deserve bonuses, but that means absolutely ALL state workers! We hope @NSHE @UNevadaGov and all our colleagues will be there to support professional employees!
"Mental illness is a flaw in chemistry, not a flaw in character." @JohnPiroNV on behalf of #ab268 #NVLEG
AB268 will mandate a written use of force policy and prohibit deadly force to protect those who pose a danger only to themselves.
